Gate and garage door motors contain sensitive electronic components that can be damaged by sudden changes in power, voltage spikes or power surges. Gate motors can be particularly vulnerable because they are usually located far away from the main electrical board and are connected by long power and communication cables.
When changing manually between Eskom and solar/inverter power, it is important that the changeover is done correctly. Switching incorrectly or too quickly can potentially damage the motor's electronic components, including the PC board, charger and connected accessories.
Before changing power sources:
Make sure your gate and garage door are closed
Switch off or isolate your gate motor and garage door motor, as well as other sensitive or high-power appliances.
Move the manual changeover switch to the OFF position.
Wait approximately 30 seconds.
Change over to Eskom or solar/inverter power.
Make sure the power supply is stable and there are no inverter faults or overload warnings.
Wait another 60 seconds before switching equipment back on. If Eskom has just returned after a power outage, allowing 2β5 minutes before reconnecting sensitive equipment is recommended
Switch your circuits and appliances back on gradually, with the gate motor being one of the last items to be reconnected.
If your gate motor has a backup battery, it should normally still operate from its battery while its incoming AC power supply is isolated.
Why Is This Important?
Incorrect changeovers, unstable power and electrical surges can potentially result in:
Damage to motor PC boards
Damaged chargers and electronic components
Reduced battery life
Intermittent motor faults
Complete motor failure
Unexpected and costly repairs
Your motor may be especially exposed to electrical surges and lightning because of its distance from the house and the number of cables running to it.
