Have you ever wondered what these stone-filled wire cages are when driving past our civil construction sites?
These are called Gabion Walls and Reno Mattresses, and they are some of the most reliable, environmentally friendly, and powerful tools we use at Kerespamo Construction to master civil engineering and stormwater management!

♣ Large, tiered gabion retaining walls expertly integrated with concrete outlet structures to control heavy water flow.
♣ Our teams and heavy machinery carefully packing, leveling, and lining these structures over geotextile membranes.
♣ The finished product—a beautifully completed concrete-capped gabion barrier providing ultimate riverbank stabilization.
♦ What are they and how do they work?
A gabion is a modular basket woven from heavily galvanized, double-twisted steel wire and packed tightly with durable, weather-resistant natural stone.
When laid out flat to line channels or riverbeds, they are called Reno mattresses.
Unlike rigid concrete walls that can crack, snap, and fail under extreme hydrostatic pressure, gabions are flexible. They naturally move and settle with the earth without losing structural integrity.
♦ Why are they so important?
1. Unmatched Erosion Control:
They absorb the violent energy of rushing water, preventing rivers, channels, and storm surges from washing away precious soil and embankments.
2. Natural Drainage & Permeability:
Water can flow freely right through the stones. This prevents dangerous water pressure from building up behind the wall, which is the number one cause of traditional wall failures.
3. Eco-Friendly Infrastructure:
Over time, silt settles in the gaps between the rocks, allowing natural vegetation to grow. This binds the structure even tighter, seamlessly blending our engineering works into the local South African landscape.

By securing these slopes, we protect roads, bridges, housing developments, and natural water systems from landslides and catastrophic flood damage.
