“Mimic agriculture” usually refers to designing farming systems that *mimic natural ecosystems* or specific organisms. There are 3 main ways people use the term:

1. *MIMIC - the software/model*
MIMIC is a coupling framework that links plant growth models with pest & disease models. It’s used in agroecological research to predict how pests/diseases affect crops over time, especially with climate change. So sometimes “mimic agriculture” means using MIMIC software for advanced crop modeling. 29b1

2. *Agriculture that mimics natural ecosystems*
This is the most common meaning. It’s also called “biomimicry in agriculture” or “natural systems agriculture”.

*The idea*: Natural ecosystems run without fertilizers, pesticides, or irrigation. So if farms copy nature’s structure, they might be more sustainable. 2e0a

*Examples:*
- *The Land Institute’s perennial polycultures*: Designing grain farms to function like mid-grass prairie, using mixes of perennial grasses, legumes, and sunflowers. e330
- *Successional Agroforestry Systems (SAFS)*: Multi-strata systems that resemble native forest structures, using ecological succession to build productive farms. 7ca9
- *Regenerative design*: Designing systems that mimic how natural ecosystems return energy to usable forms. f7b3

*The debate*: Some scientists argue this is flawed. Natural ecosystems produce very little food compared to cropland. Nature and farming have different goals - trying to make cropping work like nature often reduces food production. The value may be in copying _individual adaptations_ of wild species, not whole ecosystems. 959bf9f3

3. *Crop mimicry / Vavilovian mimicry*
This is different - it’s when w**ds evolve to look like crops to avoid being removed. Example: barnyardgrass in rice fields looks so similar to rice that farmers can’t easily w**d it out.
