One day. Three wild places. A thousand moments.

From the streets of St Lucia where hippos casually wander at dusk, to the pristine shores of Cape Vidal where the Indian Ocean meets ancient coastal forest, and finally into the magnificent wilderness of Hluhluwe, where every bend in the road holds the promise of something extraordinary.

South Africa never stops reminding me how incredibly blessed we are. One moment you’re watching a giraffe browse peacefully, the next you’re holding your breath as an elephant appears from the bush, and before you know it, you’re standing before an endless ocean.

These are the days that fill the soul. The days that remind us to slow down, look up, and simply be present in the wonder of nature.

What a privilege to share this beautiful country with my best friend, Stef. ❤️

Never a dull moment. Always a Never-Adéle-Moment.

One of the unexpected highlights of our Sodwana adventure was this beautiful marbled electric ray.

I spotted it while snorkelling over the sandy seabed and couldn’t believe my luck. Instead of disappearing, it allowed me to swim alongside it for quite some time. Calm. Unhurried. Completely at peace in its underwater world.

Then came the bonus… it even allowed me to sneak in a little selfie! 😄

But my favourite moment was watching it create its little hideaway. With gentle movements it lifted the sand around its body and slowly nestled itself into the seabed until it was almost invisible. Nature’s camouflage at its finest.

It is moments like these that remind me why I love exploring our oceans. Not because of the big, dramatic encounters, but because of these quiet moments where a wild creature allows you a glimpse into its world.

Thank you, beautiful marbled electric ray, for letting me share your journey for a little while.

There is something wonderfully ancient about eels. They don’t rush. They don’t perform. They simply move through the reef as if they belong to a secret world the rest of us only glimpse for a moment.

Sodwana gifted me one of those moments.

As I floated quietly above the reef, a beautiful Yellow-edged Moray emerged from its hiding place and began to weave its way through the coral garden. No fear. No fuss. Just confidence, curiosity and grace.

The Yellow-edged Moray is one of the larger moray species found on our reefs and can grow to well over a metre in length. Yet despite its fierce appearance and those ever-open jaws, it is usually a shy and fascinating creature, simply pumping water over its gills as it watches the world go by.

Watching it glide effortlessly through the reef reminded me that some of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures are not always the colourful stars of the show. Sometimes the magic lies in the quiet ones who reveal themselves only when you slow down enough to notice.

Every dive in Sodwana feels like opening another page in a living storybook. On this day, the storyteller was a Yellow-edged Moray, ancient, mysterious and perfectly at home in its underwater kingdom.

What an extraordinary privilege it is to be welcomed, even briefly, into their world.

Kosi Bay. The Golden Water.

Now we understand why they call it that.

The water seemed to glow from within, painted in shades of gold by the sun, the sand and the quiet magic of this remarkable place. While we didn’t strike it particularly lucky with reef life on our snorkels this time, Kosi Bay reminded us that nature is so much more than ticking species off a list.

It was the stillness. The ancient fish traps. The winding channels. The forests meeting the water’s edge. The feeling of being in a place that remains wonderfully wild and authentic.

Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t what you see beneath the surface, but the privilege of simply being present in a place where nature still sets the pace.

Thank you, Kosi Bay. You may not have shown us all your underwater treasures, but you certainly stole a little piece of our hearts.

A perfect Ballito beach day with some rather unusual company.

I’m spending the afternoon with Tannie Maria, her beloved chicken, and Sally Andrew’s latest book, Wild Things Never Die. While Tannie Maria and her feathered travelling companion keep me entertained from the pages of the Karoo, real-life dolphins are surfing the waves just beyond the tidal pool.

The snorkel is ready, the ocean is sparkling, and for a few precious hours the world feels wonderfully simple.

Books, beaches, dolphins, and a little wildness.

Exactly the kind of day that reminds us that some things never die: wonder, curiosity, good stories, and the joy of getting saltwater between your toes.

As a West Coast girl, I naturally gravitate to the ocean. But there is something incredibly delicate and refined about the Midlands Meander.

In autumn, the landscape puts on a masterclass in colour. Deep reds, rich browns, golden yellows, and the last whispers of green create a tapestry that seems almost too beautiful to be real.

This morning, I wandered around the magnificent pond in front of our hotel, soaking in the stillness, the crisp air, and the reflection of autumn’s splendour dancing on the water.

What an incredible few days we have had in this special corner of our beautiful South Africa.

From kelp forests to autumn forests, one thing remains true: beauty is everywhere when we slow down long enough to notice it.

Thank you, Midlands Meander. You have been good for the soul. 🍁🇿🇦✨
