INSTALLING TILES ON CONCRETE COUNTERTOPS – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

We’re excited to share a full project in one of our upcoming posts, but first, let’s walk you through the essentials of proper tile installation on concrete countertops especially in kitchens where strength, durability, and aesthetics matter most.

To ensure a long-lasting, clean finish, here are the key steps we follow:

Tile Size Matters

We recommend using 1200mm x 600mm tiles. These larger tiles help minimize grout lines, giving your kitchen a sleeker and more modern look, while also making cleaning easier.

The Right Adhesive is Critical

Use only original Super Fix tile adhesive. Be cautious:

Original Super Fix is grey with a cement-like consistency.

Counterfeit versions often appear brown, dry quickly, and don’t bond properly.

To further strengthen the bond:

Mix your tile adhesive with Tile Bond

Add 42.5 Superset cement and fine quarry dust

Maintain correct mix ratios for optimal consistency and strength

This mixture ensures that your tiles bond firmly to the concrete and resist detachment over time, even in humid or high-use environments.

Concrete Countertop Thickness

Ensure your concrete countertop is at least 40mm thick.
This gives a solid base that supports both the adhesive and the tiles, preventing cracks or sagging over time.

Expert Tip:
Proper preparation is everything. Take time to level the surface, clean off debris or oil, and always test your adhesive

SLAB KITCHEN – “If It’s Not Done By Us, It’s Not Strong”

At Slab Kitchen, we live by a core principle: If it’s not done by us, it’s not strong. This philosophy reflects our commitment to quality, durability, and long-term performance in every concrete kitchen unit we build.

As you prepare to construct your concrete kitchen, here are some essential guidelines to ensure strength, safety, and structural integrity:

1. Avoid Using Concrete Blocks

While blocks may seem like a budget-friendly option, they often compromise the long-term strength of your kitchen unit. Concrete construction should prioritize durability—not just cost.

Here’s why blocks are problematic:

In most cases, blocks are built directly on the footing without proper anchoring to the wall.

With a depth of only 40 mm, block walls are susceptible to cracking over time.

These cracks often originate near vulnerable areas, such as the sink, and eventually affect the plasterwork, leading to unsightly and structurally weak finishes.

2. Reinforce When Using Granite Slabs

If your design includes granite countertops with a thickness of 35 mm or more, reinforcement becomes absolutely essential. Granite is naturally heavy and can exert significant pressure on the supporting structure.

Recommendations:

Use Y10 reinforcement bars for supporting pillars built with blocks.

Use Y8 bars for the concrete slabs.

Slab thickness should range between 35 mm and 50 mm (minimum 35–40 mm for stability, maximum 50 mm for practicality).

3. Prioritize Proper Curing of Concrete

One of the most overlooked aspects of concrete construction is curing. Rushed timelines often lead to poor curing, which significantly weakens the final structure.

To ensure strength and water resistance:

Allow a minimum of 7 days for curing before applying any additional weight or finishing.

Keep the concrete consistently moist throughout the curing period.

Adhere to the correct mix ratios to optimize strength and durability.
