A Donkey or Rhodesian boiler. This is essentially a DIY hot water heater that uses wood fire and a limited water supply. They're easy to build and maintain, and really quite handy.
The nice part is they're usually not momentary heating. This is for a consistent supply of hot water, and if you build them with a brick or adobe enclosure, they can hold the heat for hours after the fire dies out. But they can also easily be designed for momentary heat, using the Rocket Donkey boiler .
