SETTING OUT
Foundation setting out is the process of transferring a building plan from paper to the actual land where construction will take place. It ensures that the foundation is accurately located according to the design, dimensions, and orientation.
Key Steps in Foundation Setting Out:
1. Site Clearing and Preparation:
Remove vegetation, debris, and topsoil.
Level the ground if necessary.
2. Establishing a Base Line:
A straight reference line (usually using pegs and strings) is created based on survey data or architect’s drawings.
This acts as a starting point for all measurements.
3. Setting Out the Corners:
Use the base line to measure and mark corner points of the foundation with pegs or markers.
Ensure 90-degree angles using the 3:4:5 triangle or a theodolite.
4. Profile Boards and Batter Boards:
These are wooden boards placed beyond the edges of the foundation to hold the string lines.
Strings define the outer and inner edges of the walls and foundation trenches.
5. Diagonal Checks:
Measure diagonals between opposite corners to confirm squareness of the layout.
6. Marking Foundation Trenches:
Mark the actual width of the foundation trench using lime, chalk, or spray paint along the strings.
7. Verification:
Double-check all measurements, levels, and angles before excavation.
