Pam Warhurst and Bridget Ruddy of Belfast asked their city government for help turning the alley behind their homes into a garden, but were met with resistance. Instead, they worked with neighbors to clear out trash, bring in compost and plant wildflower seeds. Now, the alley is a lush garden, where neighbors meet for coffee and school kids stop to pick strawberries. Says Pam: “We’ve got to give people better health, wellbeing and access to good food. It’s really simple and we don’t have to invest millions – let’s just better use land that taxpayers are already paying for.”
