Lost Monuments of Afghanistan | Have You Ever Seen the Chakari Minaret?

The Chakari Minaret was one of the most remarkable Buddhist monuments of ancient Afghanistan. Located about 16 kilometers southeast of Kabul, on a hill between Kabul and Khord Kabul, this towering structure once stood as a symbol of the region’s rich Buddhist heritage.

Together with another monument known as the Red Minaret, Chakari formed part of a vast network of Buddhist sites stretching from Mes Aynak to Guldara Stupa.

The minaret is believed to have been built during the Kushan Empire, likely between the 2nd and 4th centuries CE. Standing approximately 28 meters high, it was one of the most visible and iconic monuments overlooking the Kabul valley.

Early explorers and archaeologists such as Charles Masson and Aurel Stein documented the monument. In 1907, explorer Alfred H. H. Haydon noted that the stone foundations were deteriorating and the structure had begun to lean dangerously. This photograph is one of the few surviving images of the Chakari Minaret.

Sadly, the monument was completely destroyed during the decades of conflict in Afghanistan, and no visible trace remains today.

Although the Chakari Minaret has disappeared, it remains an enduring reminder of Afghanistan’s extraordinary history as a crossroads of civilizations, religions, and cultures.

سرک جدید مهتاب قلعه، که به نام سرک اتصالی دیوان‌بیگی به مهتاب قلعه نیز شناخته می‌شود، یکی از پروژه‌های زیربنایی مهم شاروالی کابل برای کاهش ازدحام ترافیکی در غرب کابل (دشت برچی و کمپنی) است.

مشخصات و آخرین وضعیت این پروژه تا می ۲۰۲۶ به شرح زیر است:
مسیر: این سرک منطقه دیوان‌بیگی در ناحیه پنجم (سرک کمپنی) را به منطقه مهتاب قلعه در ناحیه سیزدهم (سرک دشت برچی) متصل می‌کند.

مشخصات تخنیکی: طول این سرک ۱۷۳۳ متر و عرض آن ۳۰ متر است.پل اساسی: بخشی از این پروژه شامل ساخت یک پل موتررو به طول ۲۱.۵ متر و عرض ۲۰ متر بر روی دریای کابل است که تکمیل شده و نقش کلیدی در اتصال این دو منطقه دارد.وضعیت کنونی (می ۲۰۲۶): لایه اول قیرریزی (آسفالت) تکمیل شده و سرک به روی ترافیک باز است.

در حال حاضر، کار بر روی سنگ‌فرش پیاده‌روها، جدول‌ها و آماده‌سازی برای لایه دوم قیرریزی جریان دارد.امکانات جانبی: این پروژه شامل خطوط بایسکل‌رانی، گلدان‌ها، کانال‌های آبرو و سیستم تنویر (روشنایی) مدرن است.اهمیت پروژه:این سرک باعث تقسیم حجم ترافیک سنگین سرک اصلی دشت برچی شده و دسترسی ساکنان نواحی ۵، ۶ و ۱۳ را به مناطق دیگر شهر بسیار سریع‌تر و آسان‌تر می‌کند.
