The Qosh Tepa Canal (Persian: کانال قوش تپه; Uzbek: Qoʻshtepa kanali) is a canal being built in northern Afghanistan to divert water from the Amu Darya.The main canal is expected to be 285 km long and the overall initiative seeks to convert 550,000 hectares of desert into farmland. The Qosh Tepa Canal begins in Balkh Province and is expected to end in Faryab while passing through Jowzjan.

Today (9th April, 1336), marks the birth of Amir Timur, at Shahrisabz (Uzbekistan) as well his enthronement in Balkh in the year 1370. Timur would go on to lay the foundation of the Timurid state which stretched from 1370 to 1858.

“Tamerlane, the ‘Lord of the Conjunctions’, was the greatest Asiatic conqueror known in history. The son of a petty chieftain, he was not only the bravest of the brave, but also profoundly sagacious, generous, experienced, & preserving; & the combination of these qualities made him an unsurpassed leader of men, adored by all ranks.

As in the case of all conquerors ancient or modern, his career was attended by terrible bloodshed. He sometimes ordered massacres by way of retribution or from policy, but there were few that had their origin in pure savagery”.
