OCHRE, in collaboration with École des Arts Décoratifs - Paris, one of France’s leading design schools, is proud to announce the Heritage Rewoven project. As part of our ongoing commitment to researching and revitalizing Armenian textile traditions, this initiative explores the Armenian embroidery tradition that once flourished in the city of Ourfa.
Textiles offer insights into various developments, including technology, agriculture, trade, ritual, language, art. They serve as both utilitarian and decorative mediums, trade commodities, and tools for self-expression, encapsulating the aspirations and aesthetics of their time. For Armenians, textiles also carry the history of displacement. This displacement extends beyond material culture, encompassing savoir-faire and symbolic values that, though originally rooted elsewhere, have evolved and adapted across new contexts. Emerging from a singular source, these traditions have followed diverse trajectories, influenced by the distinct environments where survivors settled.
Ourfa embroidery, like many other techniques developed by Armenians in the Ottoman Empire—such as those from Marash and Antep—derives its name from the city where it originated. Traditionally, it was used to adorn everyday items such as towels, scarves, handkerchiefs, and tablecloths. The patterns often feature nature-inspired motifs, including vegetation, animals, and geometric or architectural symbols, with the vegetation style being the most prominent. Today, Ourfa embroidery is mainly practiced by Armenians in Syria and Lebanon, where descendants of survivors of the Armenian Genocide have preserved this intricate savoir-faire.
Heritage Rewoven unites students and professors from École des Arts Décoratifs-PSLand artists, artisans and researchers from Armenia and the Armenian diaspora, to engage with the displaced tradition of Ourfa embroidery through active exploration and exchange.
As the first step in this program, artists Anush Ghukasyan and Aleksey Manukyan, embroidery artisan Maral Shohmahlian, and Anush Zeinalian, Co-Founder of OCHRE, collaborated with École des Arts Décoratifs-PSL professors Giuseppe Caccavale (Mural Art Studio) and Orsina Visconti (Textile and Texture Design Department) to conduct a series of meetings, discussions, and workshops with a selected group of École des Arts Décoratifs-PSL students, launching the creative exploration. Participating students: Charlotte Gaillard, Violette Rouquet, Matis German, Mia Naja, Martin Bourgaux, Claire Maurice, and Theo Etrillard.
The project is funded by the “Armenia 2041” Foundation within the framework of the “Galvanizing Diaspora” Grants Program and the French Embassy / French Institute in Armenia.

ՕՔՐԱ-ն՝ համագործակցելով Ֆրանսիայի առաջատար կրթօջախներից մեկի՝ Փարիզի Դեկորատիվ արվեստների բարձրագույն դպրոցի հետ (École des Arts Décoratifs-PSL), մեկնարկում է «Վերահյուսված ժառանգություն» նախագիծը։ Նախաձեռնությունը հայկական տեքստիլ ավանդույթի ուսումնասիրությանն ու վերակենդանացմանն ուղղված ՕՔՐԱ-ի շարունակական գործունեության մասն է, և անդրադառնում է Ուրֆայի երբեմնի ծաղկուն հայկական ասեղնագործական ավանդույթին։
Տեքստիլը պատկերացում է տալիս տեխնոլոգիական, գյուղատնտեսական, առևտրային, ծիսական, լեզվական և գեղարվեստական զարգացումների մասին։ Այն միաժամանակ կիրառական է և դեկորատիվ, ապրանք է և ինքնարտահայտման միջոց, արտացոլանքն է տվյալ ժամանակաշրջանի երազանքների ու գեղեցիկի ընկալումների։ Հայերի դեպքում տեքստիլը նաև տեղահանության պատմություն է, որը ներառում է ոչ միայն նյութական մշակույթ, այլև այն հմտություններն ու խորհրդանշական արժեքները, որոնք ծագել են մի վայրում, բայց հետագայում ձևափոխվել են, հարմարվել նոր միջավայրերին։ Մի ակունքից ծնունդ առած և տարբեր հետագծեր ունեցած այս ավանդույթներն ազդվել են այն միջավայրերից, որտեղ ապաստան են գտել վերապրածները։
Ուրֆայի ասեղնագործությունը, ինչպես Օսմանյան կայսրությունում Մարաշից մինչև Այնթափ հայերի մշակած այլ ասեղնագործական տեխնիկաներ, իր անվանումը ստացել է այն քաղաքից, որտեղից սերել է։ Ավանդաբար նախշազարդվել են առօրյա իրերը՝ սրբիչներ, շարֆեր, թաշկինակներ, սփռոցներ։ Հաճախ նախշերը բնությունից ոգեշնչված մոտիվներ են՝ բուսական և կենդանական պատկերներ, երկրաչափական և ճարտարապետական խորհրդանիշներ, որոնցում առավել հայտնին բուսական ոճն է։ Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը վերապրողների ժառանգները պահպանել են այս բարդ հմտությունը, և այսօր Ուրֆայի ասեղնագործությունը կիրառվում է հիմնականում Սիրիայի և Լիբանանի հայ համայնքներում։
«Վերահյուսված ժառանգություն» նախագիծը ներգրավվում և միավորում է Փարիզի Դեկորատիվ արվեստների բարձրագույն դպրոցի ուսանողներին և դասախոսներին, Հայաստանի և հայկական սփյուռքի հետազոտողներին՝ բացահայտելու Ուրֆայի ասեղնագործական ավանդույթը։
Ծրագրի առաջին փուլում արվեստագետներ Անուշ Ղուկասյանը և Ալեքսեյ Մանուկյանը, ասեղնագործ վարպետ Մարալ Շոհմահլյանը և ՕՔՐԱ-յի համահիմնադիր Անուշ Զեյնալյանը համագործակցել են Փարիզի Դեկորատիվ արվեստների բարձրագույն դպրոցի դասախոսներ Ջուզեպե Կակավալեի (որմնանկարի արվեստանոց) և Օրսինա Վիսկոնտիի (տեքստիլի և հյուսվածքի ձևավորման ֆակուլտետ) հետ։ Հանդիպումներին, քննարկումներին և աշխատարաններին մասնակցել են դպրոցի ուսանողներ Շառլոտ Գայարը, Վիոլետ Ռուկեն, Մատիս Ժերմանը, Միա Նաժան, Մարտին Բուրգոն, Կլեր Մորիսը և Թեո Էտրիյարը։
Նախագիծն իրականացվում է «Հայաստան 2041» հիմնադրամի «Ուժեղ սփյուռք» դրամաշնորհային ծրագրի և Հայաստանում Ֆրանսիայի դեսպանության / Ֆրանսիական ինստիտուտի աջակցությամբ։
