Created around 1900, this exceptional bookcase captures the fascinating transition from Vienna’s floral Art Nouveau to the geometric language of modernism.

Its strictly structured, architectural form and faceted glass panels recall the aesthetic of Josef Hoffmann, while the embossed brass reliefs with stylized floral and leaf motifs preserve the flowing ornamentation of Viennese Art Nouveau.

Its provenance makes the attribution particularly intriguing: the bookcase originally stood in a study furnished with a Portois & Fix desk and a “London” model chair. Together with the stylistic and constructive parallels, this provides strong evidence for a possible attribution to Portois & Fix.

Already in 1906, Josef Hoffmann’s designs — particularly the chair for the consulting room of the Sanatorium Purkersdorf — revealed a new geometric clarity that would define the evolving language of Viennese modernism. His student Karl Bräuer later embraced these principles in his own furniture designs.

Following the ideals of Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte, these armchairs celebrate the honesty of the material: the lime-washed oak surface transforms the natural grain of the wood into the true ornament. With their refined craftsmanship and timeless simplicity, they represent the transition from Jugendstil towards a more modern and functional approach to design.

Metal relief by ELENA LUKSCH-MAKOWSKY - Secessionist masterpiece (Vienna, 1903)

A remarkable rediscovery from the golden age of the Viennese Secession.
Created in 1903, this rare relief panel by Elena Luksch-Makowsky was originally designed as a decorative furniture panel, reflecting the Secession's ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk—the seamless union of art, architecture and craftsmanship.

Elena Luksch-Makowsky was one of the most remarkable figures of Viennese Modernism. She became the only woman ever to receive her own Secession monogram, exhibiting alongside Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Leopold Bauer during one of the most influential periods in European art.

This panel belongs to the peak of her artistic career. Original metalworks from her Viennese period are among the rarest surviving works of her oeuvre, making discoveries like this exceptionally uncommon.
More than a beautiful decorative object, this panel is an important testament to the role of women in shaping the European avant-garde at the beginning of the twentieth century.

More than a piece of furniture – a piece of Viennese cultural history.

In the workshop of the Imperial and Royal Court Master Cabinetmaker Ludwig Schmitt, a bookcase is created for an exclusive gentleman’s study presented at the Vienna Arts and Crafts Association exhibition. Precious Macassar ebony, intricate wood, metal, and mother-of-pearl inlays, and countless hours of masterful craftsmanship give it an extraordinary presence that endures to this day.

A rare and historically significant bookcase from 1911, originally created as part of a fully designed gentleman’s study for architect Maximilian Rossipaul. Produced by the renowned Viennese cabinetmaking workshop Julius und Josef Herrmann, the piece reflects the refined craftsmanship and functional elegance associated with the circle of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte.

The original marked key and surviving invoice confirm its authenticity and provenance. Together with the matching desk, desk chair, and two club armchairs preserved in our collection, the bookcase forms part of an exceptionally rare, nearly complete Viennese Modernist interior. A remarkable example of the close collaboration between architects and master craftsmen in Vienna around 1910.

This exceptional game table was commissioned in 1905 as a bespoke piece by the renowned Michael Niedermoser workshop for Villa Reicher in Tullnerbach near Vienna. It exemplifies the refined fusion of architectural design, master craftsmanship, and artistic ambition that defined high-end Austrian interiors around 1900.

Michael Niedermoser was among the leading art furniture workshops of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, known for creating exclusive interiors for villas and grand residences. The workshop collaborated with prominent architects and designers including Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich, contributing directly to Vienna’s pioneering modern design movement.

A rare testament to the elegance and craftsmanship of the Wiener Moderne era.

This delicate desk bears the signature of Bernhard Ludwig, clearly attributing it to the Imperial & Royal (K.u.K.) Court Cabinetmaking Workshop in Vienna. Founded in 1865, the company was awarded an honorary diploma at the Vienna World’s Fair in 1873.

Bernhard Ludwig served as court cabinetmaker to the King of Romania as well as Imperial & Royal Court Cabinetmaker in Austria, and contributed as an interior designer to prestigious buildings such as the Parliament, the Palace of Justice, the Burgtheater, and the Hermes Villa.

The wooden surface has been professionally restored—blue stained and white limed—giving the piece a distinctive and elegant appearance. With its refined design on all sides, this desk is perfectly suited as a freestanding statement piece.
