Provenance Indigenous Plants

Provenance Indigenous Plants We grow local native plants of Adelaide, from seed sourced locally, helping contribute to the conservation of endangered species.

We seek to respect Kaurna culture, although not being Aboriginal run. Provenance Indigenous Plants would like to acknowledge this land that we meet on is the traditional lands for the Kaurna people and that we respect their spiritual relationship with their country. We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.

Did you know that butterflies can’t survive without their host plants?
Many of our native butterfly species rely on very specific host plants to complete their life cycle and depend on these plants for their survival.

I've been trying to get Kaurna names into the plant labels. The cultural rabbit holes are hard to ignore, so this week has been an adventure.

Many of the names will be directly from the language authority KWP, but some will be best estimates. I highly recommend their dictionary.

A story time 📚 of concepts to keep in mind: 💡

Kaurna words line up more with our use of common names than botany. For example "mirnu" basically means "wattle bush." 🌳

The Kaurna language was recorded by European men, so parts are missing. Especially around women's work and things they found "a bit gross". 🤷‍♀️

We will never know the species that "Bardi" moths refer to, because it wasn't that desirable for European gentlemen to know. 🏰

😭 Someone should have sent an entomologist or a botanist. ❤️🦋🪲🌾

Parklands protection event on today in the CBD.

This Mother’s Day, let’s stand for Mother Nature before it’s too late! 💪💚Adelaide Park Lands Association have organised an event to raise awareness.

Today, Mother’s Day at 3:00pm, at Montefiore Hill, North Adelaide to defend Possum Park, the people’s Adelaide Park Lands, our precious urban forest - and our poor vulnerable wildlife who don’t know what’s about to hit them.

We will be tying yellow ribbons around the trees bordering the North Adelaide Golf Course a heartfelt symbol of love, resistance, and solidarity for the magnificent living world now facing destruction.

In coming days, as early as Monday morning, chainsaws could begin tearing through this irreplaceable landscape. Fences have already gone up. Trees have already been marked. The silence from decision-makers has been deafening.

But we will not stay silent.

We are calling on every person who loves Adelaide, who values nature, who believes wildlife matters, to come and stand together. Stand for the koalas clinging to these trees. Stand for the birds whose songs fill our mornings. Stand for the adorable possums, the 150 species of wildlife that inhabit this area, the biodiversity, the irreplaceable ecosystem, the shade, the history, the lungs and soul of our city.

This is not just about trees.

This is about protecting the heart of Adelaide.

The 585 trees slated for destruction are living giants that have stood through generations. They clean our air, cool our city, shelter wildlife, and connect people to nature in the middle of urban life. Once they are destroyed, they can never truly be replaced.

Future generations will ask what we did when these trees were threatened.

Let the answer be: we stood together.

Bring your family. Bring your friends. Bring your children. Bring your voices, your compassion, your courage and don’t forget to bring mum too.

Some yellow ribbons will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own.

The Park Lands belong to the people, not to privilege, profit, or political power.

This Mother’s Day, let’s stand for Mother Nature before it’s too late. 💚💪

We have nearly 35,000 signatures please sign and share. Every single voice matters! SIGN HERE: https://c.org/xrbgXyhdXP

Got a keen eye for fungi? 🍄

Join the Fungi for Function team for their final year of citizen science surveys!

The team are searching for 28 fungi target species in stringybark bushland as part of a 3-year research project. It's a great opportunity to learn how to identify some common fungi and lichen species, and find out more about their essential roles in our ecosystems!

They are looking for volunteers for the following dates:

🍄 Thursday 4 June 10am-3pm - Hope Forest (near Willunga)
🍄 Friday 5 June 10am-3pm - Hope Forest (near Willunga)
