The Trinity College Roseworthy outdoor learning environments are designed as a campus-wide learning framework, not a collection of playgrounds. It operates as a graduated network of settings, from structured teaching terraces to quiet garden rooms, enabling the College to shift learning outside as pedagogy, cohort needs and programs evolve. At the core, the School Heart concentrates high-use, highly supervised spaces for social connection, active play and informal gathering. From there, learning settings extend into the landscape, offering increasing choice and autonomy as students develop. This supports multiple modes of learning: whole-class instruction, small-group collaboration, independent work and targeted intervention.

The Trinity College Roseworthy Campus creates a contemporary learning environment that supports education, wellbeing, and community life within Adelaide’s northern growth corridor. The campus brings together primary and early years education, and shared facilities within a cohesive masterplanned setting, establishing a strong civic presence for the emerging Roseworthy community. Purpose-built R–6 learning neighbourhoods are supported by flexible breakout areas, a library, and multipurpose hall, enabling collaborative teaching practices and varied learning settings. The integrated Early Learning Centre and Outside School Hours Care strengthen continuity of education, while indoor recreation facilities position the campus as a destination for sport and community activity. Architectural expression is defined by sweeping roof forms and articulated façades that give the school a confident identity. Passive environmental strategies, generous daylight, and shaded outdoor learning areas support comfort, sustainability, and connection to landscape, fostering adaptable and engaging educational experiences for students.

To celebrate National Reconciliation Week, Swanbury Penglase held a staff breakfast to acknowledge the importance of reconciliation and reflect on our ongoing commitment through our Reconciliation Action Plan. The morning provided an opportunity to come together and learn.

We were privileged to hear Lana Greer present on the Aboriginal Knowledges Centre, Yaitya Ngutu Wardli project: a collaboration between Greenaway Architects, Mantirri Design, and Swanbury Penglase.

The discussion centred on the importance of co-design, and the responsibility we hold as designers to listen deeply, work respectfully, and allow Aboriginal stakeholders and Elders to guide the process.

During National Reconciliation Week, this project is a powerful reminder that reconciliation must be active and ongoing: grounded in truth-telling, cultural respect, and genuine partnership. Yaitya Ngutu Wardli demonstrates how design can help create places of learning, connection, and shared future.

To celebrate South Australia's History Festival, Swanbury Penglase hosted a tour of the immediate surrounds of our office, encompassing Gilbert Street, Little Gilbert Street, Sturt Street and Logan Street.

This gave us the opportunity to explore the history of the Adelaide City Grid and Park Lands, the Adelaide Mosque, traditional building materials and the curse of rising damp, together with some of quirky former residents of Logan Street and understanding how the area has evolved with time.

On Monday 5th May, our own Dr Stephen Schrapel spoke at the SA Major Projects Conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre. In a panel discussion titled ‘Harmonising Modern Skyscrapers with Heritage Buildings’, Stephen joined Elizabeth Vines and Sandy Wilkinson to discuss the importance of conserving Adelaide’s heritage buildings while accommodating the needs of a growing city population.

Some projects are defined not just by the outcome, but by how they are shaped along the way.

The Aboriginal Knowledges Centre, Yaitya Ngutu Wardli, which translates to Aboriginal Knowledge House, has now commenced on site at Adelaide University’s City West campus. This marks a significant milestone in a deeply collaborative journey.

Over the past three years, the project has been shaped through an ongoing co-design process with Aboriginal stakeholders, with the voices of Aboriginal students, staff, and Elders at its core. In particular, the Purkarninthi Elders group have played a vital role in guiding the project, ensuring the design responds to Country, community, and Aboriginal knowledge systems.

A close collaboration between Greenaway Architects, Mantirri Design, and Swanbury Penglase has underpinned the design process. Together, the team has listened first, allowing conversations, stories, and cultural guidance to shape every decision.

With works now underway on site by Sarah Constructions, the project enters an important new phase in its journey from co-design to delivery. The result will be more than a redevelopment of the Lewis O’Brien / Yarlupurka Building and courtyard. It will be a dedicated environment for Aboriginal and Non-Indigenous peoples to engage through two-way knowledge sharing, respect, and reciprocity.

This project demonstrates the potential of design as a shared process, guided by those with deep knowledge of and connection to Country. We are proud to be part of that process and grateful for the trust placed in us along the way.

Completion is anticipated in late 2026, and we look forward to continuing the journey together.

Adelaide Town Hall is one of the city’s most recognisable and historically significant buildings, standing at the centre of civic and community life for more than 160 years. As part of the City of Adelaide’s commitment to preserving its most important cultural places, a series of conservation and refurbishment works has been undertaken across the Town Hall complex. Externally, restoration works addressed deterioration to ensure the long-term stability of the building and the safety of the public, including conservation of the landmark Albert Tower and reconstruction of its lantern. Internally, the historic 1866 Auditorium and surrounding spaces were revitalised through research-informed repair and redecoration, and careful refurbishment of significant elements. Together with upgrades to other prominent rooms, the completed works strengthen the Town Hall’s sustainability, enhance cultural engagement, and reinforce its enduring role in Adelaide’s civic and community life.
