Various window openings taking shape across our education projects on site around Adelaide.

Each window, arch and opening is carefully positioned to frame views to the city and surrounding landscape, both near and far.

These moments of outlook are designed to spark curiosity and conversation for students, while visually reconnecting new learning spaces with existing campus buildings, the wider city fabric, and the hills and skyline beyond.

Projects shown:
- Catherine McAuley School
- St Aloysius College, Adelaide

How can a historic building teach curious minds?

At Wilderness School’s new Early Learning Centre, classical proportions were transformed into new learning environments. A process of removal and curated additions stitches together old fabrics & new insertions. Additions formalize a central play space within whilst classical & playful rooflines sparks imagination & wonder.
Covered outdoor learning, kitchen gardens and generous tree canopies to come take the classroom outside where varied building forms & landscape become an educational tool for curious minds.

~ Repositioning the traditional Alteration and Addition ~

Twelve Degree House looks to re-interpret the much-loved alteration & addition spatial layout, pivoting off grid, contorting the original spine towards the northern light and pressing away from the boundary to embrace deeper diagonal views into the landscape.

A continuous double-sided joinery piece responds directly to the adjacent program whilst creating a buffer between public and private realms. This intervention unlocks greatly improved amenity with minimum footprint.

Through considered intervention and excavation the layered history of the site is revealed, shining a light on the recent art deco features embedded in the 1890s stone cottage. The addition provides a seamless transition into the new pavilion that supports contemporary living.

GGA is excited to have developed an early vision for reimagining Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute on Kaurna Country. The work acknowledges the site’s layered history and considers how Country, culture and community could again play a more visible role in the cultural life of SA.

Having originated the site’s transformation into an Aboriginal gallery and cultural centre in the 1980s, GGA reflects on a longstanding connection to the place that will inform future thinking about the site.

What if the first years of school felt like home?

At Wilderness School’s Coach House, the familiar language of home is reimagined to create a nurturing place for Reception and Year 1 learners. Scaled to suit its young occupants, the two-storey form sits comfortably within the leafy residential context, echoing the grain, materiality and warmth of the surrounding houses. Light brickwork, timber interiors and domestic cues, from nooks to a fireplace, foster a sense of belonging while lofty spaces and skylights spark imagination.

Set within a carefully unified masterplan, the Coach House connects seamlessly to the Early Learning Centre courtyard and the broader campus. Across the sloping site, terraced outdoor rooms, linked piazzas and retained mature trees mediate between building and landscape, embedding learning within nature. Generous central communal spaces and outdoor learning areas dissolve the boundary between inside and out, supporting collaboration, movement and play.

Through adaptive reuse and considered new interventions, the project enhances the established streetscape of Hawkers Rd and strengthens the school’s relationship with its community - an architecture grounded in continuity, care and connection to place.

10 years since!

As we wrap up our final submissions for this years AIA Awards we look back at these award winning projects for GGA that span residential & urban, heritage and new contexts that have played a vital role in transforming both domestic and public realm spaces in Adelaide since there completion in 2016.

Whether unlocking a tightly packed inner-suburban house, responding to a heritage listed site with a compact scale residence to preserve a number of significant trees or a city oriented civic link that connects both everyday users and reflective moments these projects spanning differing typologies inform & benefit each other in practice.

GGA today continues this strong ethos of learning & contributing to diverse scales for projects across urban, regional and remote locations, looking to uplift both the family and the city in everything we do.
