A quick little tour around the home garden that heals my brain and makes me feel de-stressed after a long day.

Or a moment just to go out, check out what the plants are doing, see what's flowering, and see what's doing well. Be amongst it. Brush your fingers through the leaves, shove your face in it, and enjoy every moment. Crush some of the leaves in your fingers and smell the beautiful natural fragrance.

It's bloody amazing.

This one's for all my people out there looking to learn design!

I'm thinking of doing an in-person 3-4 hour masterclass in Adelaide, looking maybe in October.

I'm also thinking about running a 12-week online program (1-2 hours per week online as a workshop), going through my whole process: everything I do from onboarding clients to site visits, the actual designing, and the transition from post-design into implementation and beyond. That might be something that can keep rolling over.

As part of the 12-week online program, I'm even thinking we could have an in-person workshop. It might be a bit hard to go interstate all the time, but I could possibly wrangle Melbourne, maybe.

Let me know in the comments if you're keen for either of those so I can detail everything and take note of who's interested.

Happy Friday! Hope everyone is having a lovely day.

I've been having a lot of really great discussions with existing and potential clients on their projects at the moment. A lot of it is based around land and water management, but also providing habitat and doing the right thing for the future. Everyone has a plethora of unique opportunities with their landforms and properties.

I was speaking to a potential client yesterday who is in country Victoria and has neighbouring dams soaking their land. These sorts of challenges are presented case by case, and it is always so rewarding to get to a site visit, see what is possible, and feel that sense of excitement about the opportunities ahead. Those preliminary discussions with clients are so important.

The 2D visual plan is such an important aspect of overall design. It is like the tip of the iceberg, carrying all the thoughts and ideas that have eventuated from many hours of thinking, sketching, and bringing everything together: from the site visit and multiple conversations, to spending hours banging your head against one small 10m² area to make it make sense amongst the larger spaces of a project. You can easily get caught spending too much time on one particular zone just trying to give it continuity with the rest of the design.

I have found that a truly visual 2D plan gives a great sense of what the project can become. It is also very human and very real. Even though I am sketching and drawing these digitally on an iPad, I am still using my hands and my brain, not relying on anything else to pull it together.

A lot of the designers I am inspired by hand-draw most of their gardens. I have tried every which way and every program, and everything felt sterile to me. Doing it this way allows me to use my hands, expressing my ideas, creativity, and skill set in a way that actually translates into real gardens.

Project Design Snapshot: Red Cliffs, Victoria

This was a wonderful and challenging project to undertake with many elements to deliver, including:
• Fire pit zone
• Plunge pool
• Extendable deck
• Native lawn section
• Veggie kitchen garden
• Little camp zone
• Fruit orchard
• Work studio
• Entrance shelter
• Outdoor kitchen zone
• Nature play area for the kids
• Meandering pathways
• Native habitat mimicking the local arid and riverland zones (being close to the Murray River)

There was a great diversity of plants that we could lean on for this design, alongside implementing a lot of water management, such as a large rain garden creek that spills out off the site.

It is always a great challenge to bring everything together, especially in an area that has its own climatic challenges. Looking forward to seeing this one come into fruition as it is staged out over the next few years.

I'm designing a property at the moment. It's a coastal block, in from the beach a little bit, sort of near the coastal scrub. It's just so nice to work with a place that has a lot of existing vegetation that you have to work around and create new opportunities from, designing it so there's real interest and it's not just straight and narrow, with nooks and crannies and so many different elements to it.

It does take a lot of time, thinking, and banging your head against the wall trying to solve problems across all these areas:
• Water management: how do we get the water from this corner to that corner?
• Planting and species selection: using the right species, working with the understorey beneath the existing canopy, and managing open areas
• Layout: what are the boundary lines doing, where are our resting places, and where are our little opportunities to grow food?

The list goes on, but it's always a fun challenge to bring it all together across a single property. You make sure you go through your proper design processes to get to that successful point where it's truly functional. You can already see it in your mind and envision what it's going to be like in five or ten years' time, knowing that with the right ex*****on and maintenance, it'll become a highly successful garden.
