Here’s a good example of something most people never realise can seriously damage a tree.

On today’s job, the homeowner had tied a hollow log to the trunk of their tree about 8 metres up. Over time, the strap began to bite into the bark and cambium layer — the living tissue that transports water and nutrients. The tree had started to “strangle” itself around the strap. This is how accidental ringbarking begins.

When something is tied tightly around a trunk or branch — straps, ropes, wire, garden ties, even old tree guards — the tree keeps growing, but the constriction doesn’t. Eventually it can cut off the flow of nutrients, weaken the structure, and in some cases kill the entire section above the restriction.

If you need to attach something to a tree:
- Use wide, flexible strapping designed for trees
- Check it every few months
- Leave room for growth
- Never use wire directly on bark

Trees are tough, but they’re also living systems — and small oversights can cause long-term damage.

If you’re unsure whether something is harming your tree, I’m always happy to take a look and give honest, practical advice.
