Paper daisies are very rewarding plants. I have a favourite called Kimberly Sunset with broad leaves, a dwarf habit and masses of pink and pale orange flowers during the warmer months. Seeds tend to revert to white so it's best to grow these from cuttings each year. They will live for two years at least. They are very easy care apart from deadheading regularly. These are being grown in a wine cask that has a very sandy mix. I occasionally have them for sale.

Are you growing Eremophilas? These inland plants grow all over Australia in the deserts and on the plains. They are remarkably adaptable to most gardens. They flower for long periods and attract birds. The nursery has several varieties for sale at the moment. Eremophila maculata 'Magic Blush' is a small attractive shrub with short stiff leaves and large spotted cerise pink flowers. It likes a sunny position and is very drought hardy.

This afternoon I solved a problem. Last year I bought some large Coir peat blocks. I usually buy the small ones, put them in water and they expand to fill a 9L bucket or more. I use this to make up my seed raising mix. Unfortunately the large blocks had coarsely cut fibre which couldn't be used as seed raising mix. What to do with it. I ended up using it as a mulch for my potted plants. It is w**d free and will retain moisture in the top layer of soil. Let's see how it works!

What a fabulous Spring we are having. Are you growing Brachyscomes? These spreading ground cover daisies brighten up the garden wherever they are planted. I have just added White Delight, Break 0'Day and a mauve form from Victoria to the nursery list. I have these tucked into corners of my garden, around the base of my potted plant collection and under Camellias. They flower for long periods and make a wonderful border. Plant them along the drive - they are low enough to withstand vehicle movements. They can be pruned back at any time and are adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates.

Billy Buttons are very underrated plants. The botanical name is Chrysocephalum apiculatum and the nursery is selling a form called 'Cate's Orange. This perennial species is widespread throughout the tablelands and can usually be seen along the side of the road in gravel drains. It's very drought hardy but may die back in winter in exposed frosty sites. It will re-emerge in spring and form a large clump flowering continually over the warmer months. Plants can be tucked into small pockets where you need a spot of colour. it is attractive to bees and other insects and may self sow.
