Austplant Nursery and Gardens Austplant Nursery specialises in Australian native plants & indigeous plants to the Mornington Peninsula. Refer to Austplant website at www.austplant.com.au

Austplant offers expert service in native gardens and offers approx 600 different species. Many suburban nurseries have been family businesses passed from parent to child and would not be viable if the land they occupied had to be purchased or rented. One such nursery is Austplant Nursery and Gardens on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Established in the early 1970’s by Len and Cheryl Yearsl

ey as a small operation out of a hayshed it has steadily grown year on year and remains a successful business now being owned by their son Glen and his wife Angela. It is one of only a handful of the remaining native nurseries servicing metropolitan Melbourne and surrounds. Austplant was established in the 1970’s wave of interest in Australian Plants. At that time there was a limited understanding of what was required to successfully landscape using native plants but none the less they were popular. The inevitable backlash came when these gardens became rambling, unpruned and poorly fertilised taking a form that did not meet the practical needs of the households that lived in them. A lot has been learnt since then and it was gardeners and nurseries like Austplant that learned how to understand, use, tame and domesticate native plants to make them work as the soft landscaping (the plant component of landscaping) in our gardens. To show this off and educate the public a large section of the over 6 hectares that Austplant occupies are maintained as display gardens landscaped to show off the mature forms of the plants available. Visitors to Austplant are encouraged to explore the gardens to imagine how they might work in the landscaping of their garden. Visitors are also encouraged to pinch off small sections of the plants in the garden not only to help the team identify the plants in question but also to educate them about the need to prune native plants. (Alas, the 1970’s notion that native plants do not need pruning is persists for many gardeners.) Local knowledge about soil types and climatic conditions has also been key to Austplant’s survival as a viable nursery has also been key. Knowing which plants will grow where and why means that expert advice is correctly dispensed.

Spyridium parvifolium ‘Dusty Miller’ doing its thing in our display gardens. This is a youngster, but it will reach 1-2m and loves a good prune! Grows excellent in part shade but tolerant of full sun; flowers year round with cute dusty flowers; and looks great planted next to colourful flowers like this scaevola ‘mauve clusters’ 🤍

Meet the creators of Austplant nursery- Len and Sheryl!
60 years ago, with an incredible amount of hard work and vision, Glen’s parents cleared the land, built the nursery from the ground up, and created the home at the bottom of the property where Glen and his family still live today.
Over the decades, they transformed the landscape by planting Australian natives — many of which are now the towering, majestic gums throughout the gardens.
Thank you for 60 years of dedication to Australian plants, the environment, and creating something truly special 💚
A beautiful legacy, still growing strong. 🌱
