With the worst of the heat behind us, and having had a little rain recently, Autumn is a great time to get out in the garden, and take stock. It’s not too late to do some tidying up of herbaceous plants that can look a bit rough after Summer, grasses can be cut back to encourage fresh new growth, and new cool season plants can be planted to fill gaps, add diversity and brighten up dull areas.
We’ve got a wider range of smaller herbs, groundcovers, and native grasses than usual this Autumn, with some standouts that have shrugged off the heat and kept flowering over recent months including Wahlenbergia luteola (Yellowish bluebell) pictured below, and some of the native grasses such as wallaby grass species, and Microlaena stipoides (Weeping grass) that are now producing their second crop of seed this season.

Season 2025 officially wrapped up with the last of the project orders picked up in early January, and what a great project to be involved in.
Looking forward to hearing how they go, and the results of any future frog surveys in planted dams 🐸

Would anyone be able to help Karen Molenkamp help a friend out?

‘Hey fellow gardeners, I have a friend studying environmental science who is hoping someone has a garden of native plants, who lives in the middle of suburbia surrounded by not many native plants, who would let her stand in their back yard and count birds for an assignment? Ideally their neighbour a few doors down without a native plant garden also lets me count birds!
Very specific, I realise but hoping for the best. 🤞’

If you think your garden might be suitable, or think you know someone whose garden might fit the bill, please get in touch with Karen or comment below

Thanks in advance guys

End of season sale - while the main revegetation and farm planting season is coming to a close, there’s still time to add some colour and texture to your garden using local native species.
These Golden Everlastings (Chrysocephalum apiculatum) in 140mm pots have been marked down to $10 each and offer instant colour and habitat value for native pollinators including a range of butterfly species.

Also available in forestry tubes at $3.00 each

A later than normal spring, and busy schedule has put things a bit behind, but it’s nice to see some of the herbaceous plants coming into their peak in what I refer to as wildflower month.
Warmer days, still potential for rain makes it a great time to add some colour to your garden or planting, and the butterflies will love you for it too

Spring is almost here, and though it’s been a strange winter, the local groundcovers and herbs are finally starting getting close to being plantable.
This year sees the return of a wahlenbergia luteola (yellowish bluebell) to our range. A delicate but hardy sprawling herb from the western plains, it’s great for grassland revegetation or as part of a home garden for a splash of blue in the warmer months. As with most of the local bluebells, the bright blue flowers are a source of nectar for pollinators such as butterflies and some native bees.
The flowers can also be used as brightly coloured garnish, or sprinkled in salads for splash of colour

Its that time of the year again. Always happy to get the call from Badac Ballarat to supply locally indigenous seedlings for their annual NAIDOC week celebrations. Hopefully these babies are going to loving homes all over the district.

Finally got to spend some time running seed I’ve collected through sieves, and even got the vacuum box fired up this week. It’s such a satisfying part of the job, and sometimes the end result is almost artistic.
These dried Melicytus seeds always remind me of river pebbles
