With the worst of the heat behind us, and having had a little rain recently, Autumn is a great time to get out in the garden, and take stock. It’s not too late to do some tidying up of herbaceous plants that can look a bit rough after Summer, grasses can be cut back to encourage fresh new growth, and new cool season plants can be planted to fill gaps, add diversity and brighten up dull areas.
We’ve got a wider range of smaller herbs, groundcovers, and native grasses than usual this Autumn, with some standouts that have shrugged off the heat and kept flowering over recent months including Wahlenbergia luteola (Yellowish bluebell) pictured below, and some of the native grasses such as wallaby grass species, and Microlaena stipoides (Weeping grass) that are now producing their second crop of seed this season.
