Porter Architects Architecture Porter Architects is a multi-disciplinary design based studio located in the beautiful Victorian regional city of Ballarat.

The practice focuses on cultural, residential and commercial projects providing full architectural services. Director Nathan Porter is a registered architect in the state of Victoria and is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects. His comprehensive experience at some of Australia’s premier architectural practices has formed a worldly maturity in his craft of architecture. His buildings

encompass thoughtful detailing, attention to materiality, rigorous planning, thorough consideration of site, context and sustainable design. The result is a clear, honest, purposeful and warmly crafted building that affects the human sensory. Nathan believes the creation of a building begins with a strong understanding and collaborative relationship with the client. This approach embraces the idea that the architect should be the interpreter for the client’s ideas and goals for a project.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT-BALLARAT EAST HOUSE

Located on the fringes of Ballarat, Victoria, the Ballarat East House sits on a native-treed, half-acre plot overlooking the city. Designed to respond sensitively to its environment, the house offers a rich, year-round living experience: in winter it embraces natural light and weather views, while in summer its raised structure and open layout facilitate natural ventilation.

The building is carefully zoned into four key areas: a transitional entry corridor, a public living wing, a private sleeping/amenity wing, and a central courtyard that ties everything together. This courtyard becomes a protected outdoor living space, creating a calm refuge from the elements.

Materiality is central to the design: the house is wrapped in locally sourced, vertically clad Australian hardwood board-and-batten, echoing the surrounding eucalyptus trees. Internally, recycled hardwood floorboards and character-rich native timber joinery reinforce a warm, handcrafted feel, while the kitchen’s travertine stone bench brings geological texture to the heart of the home.

Overall, the Ballarat East House is a thoughtful, crafted home that balances context, materiality, and environmental responsiveness, and is a strong example of our commitment to sensitive, contemporary design.
