VALE Darrel Conybeare
31 May 1938-21 December 2024

With great sadness we announce the passing of Darrel Conybeare, founding Director of Conybeare Morrison (CM+) and

Darrel is perhaps best known for his pioneering work improving the design of cities in Australia and internationally, over a career of more than 60 years as an architect, city planner and urban designer, and for his lifelong commitment to the quality of the public domain through the design and manufacture of street furniture.

His celebrated work to transform Macquarie Street and Circular Quay for the 1988 Bicentennial Celebrations, together with his creative master planning input for the Sydney 2000 Olympics are but two of his major high profile career achievements which showcase his passion and drive for city making. He helped establish urban design in its infancy as an essential design process and defined the true spirit and art of the discipline.

After being awarded First Class Honours and the University Medal at Sydney University in 1962, Darrel studied in America at the University of Pennsylvania attaining a Master of Architecture and Master of Civic Design, going on to work at high profile practices, including, by invitation, that of Charles and Ray Eames in Los Angeles. On return to Australia, he made a major contribution to the 1971 City of Sydney Strategic Plan as environmental and urban design director, before founding an ambitious multidisciplinary practice, Planning Workshop, and going on to establish Conybeare Morrison (1980), Street Furniture Australia (1986) together with Bill Morrison, and (1991) with both Bill and Oi Choong.

Darrel was an inspiration with his curious and constant stream of new ideas, and his gentle and thoughtful leadership style. He was a champion of city making, a true visionary, teacher, poet, mentor and a friend to many.

A celebration of Darrel’s life was held on Tuesday 11 February 2025 at Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay, on Sydney Harbour in a fitting tribute to his contribution to the establishment and practice of urban design in Australia. It was a joyful but sorrowful farewell.

CM+ Talk Series #18

CM+ were privileged to have Paolo Stracchi (Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technology at the University of Sydney) and Luciano Cardellicchio (Deputy Director of Architecture and Senior Lecturer in Architectural Construction at the University of NSW) present their insightful and engrossing talk, ‘Sails, Octopuses and Telescopic Cranes: Building the Sydney Opera House’.

The multi–award winning talk outlined their published and continuing archival research into the intellectual contribution and ingenuity of the Sydney Opera House’s Australian contractor, Hornibrook, and the close collaboration with Sir Ove Arup and Jørn Utzon that realised the visionary design.

The focus of the talk was the construction of the Opera House’s iconic sails, based on previously unexplored construction documents and 5,000 shop drawings produced by Hornibrook (in pencil, on tracing paper), that reveal the intellectual contribution and astonishing methods utilised to build the sails from 1963-67.

Thanks to Paolo and Luciano for sharing their discoveries with us and to everyone who attended and contributed to the lively post talk discussion.

CM+ are pleased to announce we have joined forces with , to provide innovative design solutions for transit and metro developments, aviation, and the commercial sectors.

FarrellsCM+ will provide services across a range of project types, with a focus on transport and transit-oriented developments. Transformative projects include, Embankment Place and Vauxhall Cross in London and Kowloon Station Development, The Peak Tower in Hong Kong, Sydney MetroWest and Waterpoint Sustainable City in Vietnam.

The alliance consolidates a 50-year relationship between the two firms, since Bill Morrison headed up Farrells urban design unit in London and celebrates decades of working together with the Hong Kong Directors Gavin Erasmus and Stefan Krummeck. Richard Nugent, Design Director at CM+, associated with Farrells during his time in Hong Kong in the mid‐1990’s said – “We are driven by the same values to create places for the public that make our cities better. This is why our practices have come together again and again over the years. It is exciting to be able to move forward as a more unified team here in Australia.”

Farrells, founded by Sir Terry Farrell CBE in the UK in the 1960s, is one of the leading architecture and urban design practices in London. In 1991 Farrells Hong Kong was established to provide professional services across Asia with a significant number of high-profile award‐winning projects. CM+ together with Acciona Samsung Bouygues Joint Venture are delighted to be shortlisted at this year's NSW Architecture Awards for WestConnex - Campbell Road Ventilation Facility (CRVF).

The CRVF has been transformed into a major work of public art providing a wayfinding landmark at the tunnel threshold, a ‘Connection to Country’ statement and opportunity to foster reconciliation. The CRVF performs its function as a key operational component of the motorway while addressing larger issues of wayfinding, culture and place.

“We are pleased to see this project shortlisted and recognised for the way it transforms the urban landscape around it through the power of art.” - Richard Nugent, Design Director

Congratulations to everyone involved and to all the other award nominees.

WestConnex M4-M5 Link Project Opens

CM+ are proud to be the architects and urban designers in the team delivering Stage 1 of the M4-M5 Link Project which opened to traffic today, between St Peters and Haberfield

The project, which will be known as extensions of the M4 and M8, will seamlessly connect the M4 at Haberfield to the M8 at St Peters, creating the longest continuous underground motorway in Australia.

The project is comprised of 7.5 kilometre twin tunnels that can accommodate up to four lanes of traffic in each direction.

On the surface, the Campbell Road Ventilation Facility is a synthesis between art and architecture with a 300 metre long artwork forming the building’s façade. The artwork ‘Movement of Shells, Movement of Time’ by Aboriginal artists Esme Timbery and Marilyn Russell showcases local culture to a wide audience, on a daily basis.

It’s been quite a journey! Congratulations to WestConnex | Transurban, Acciona Samsung Bouygues Joint Venture and the entire team on the outstanding outcome of this crucial link in the overall WestConnex project.

CM+ are pleased to announce two senior appointments to our Architecture team.

Antonino Lalli is the new Director of Architecture and a key member of the practice’s leadership team. He joins CM+ after running his own practice for the last 10+ years, with a breadth of knowledge and 20 years’ experience in the design and successful delivery of large scale projects across the commercial, residential, education, industrial and mixed use sectors.

Antonino has a passion for design excellence and believes that Architecture is more than just aesthetics. It is a continuous journey with discovery and learning at its core, where new ideas are nurtured and certain risks taken along the way. It is then turned on its head, as art intersects with science during project delivery.

He will work closely with our clients and lead the CM+ Architecture team to strengthen and grow the Architecture portfolio and is “…looking forward to building on the strong Architecture and Placemaking that Darrel Conybeare and Bill Morrison have fostered over the last 40 years.”

Associate Director Jon Widagdo is a designer with extensive experience and technical ability in the architecture and interior design of retail, hospitality, industrial and a range of commercial and residential mixed use projects. He has previously worked for both Architects and Property Developers, providing him with a deep understanding of the benefits of utilising design to improve commercial outcomes. Jon has also been a Design Tutor in the Faculty of Built Environment at UNSW.

He will lead projects across the Architecture portfolio, providing design and sustainability leadership, strengthening the CM+ brand in the marketplace.

We look forward to their significant contribution to all our architectural projects and the future strategic direction of CM+.

In Person: Kash Rangan

“The beauty of all our projects is that they have been underpinned with a greater vision. Infrastructure is not just about getting people from A to B, but the whole user experience and how we can provide opportunities for interesting things to happen along this journey. We’re always thinking about how we are able to contribute to the betterment of a space through the journey of the user experience.” - Kash

Recently promoted, Kash talks about why infrastructure brings people and places together and his first meeting with Bill and Darrel (CM+ founders).
