Christmas has come early in Ocean Grove 🎄

Handover today for a thoughtfully resolved renovation focused on improving daylight pe*******on, enhancing the connection between interior living spaces and the north-facing deck, and delivering a series of refined upgrades.

Thank you to our clients, Matt & Lisa, for their trust, and to Chris @ Character Building for delivering the project seamlessly while the clients were travelling.

Good architecture is in the details — the way materials meet, how junctions are resolved, and how spaces flow seamlessly. It’s these quiet decisions that shape the experience of a place.

“We want to live in the view.” This was the guiding brief for a holiday home perched high above Lorne, where sweeping coastal panoramas informed every architectural move.

A palette of rammed earth, eucalyptus green and dark char timber battens was inspired by the ironbark forests and red cliffs of the Surfcoast, reinforcing the clients’ desire for the home to be of its site, yet also connect to the view.

The home recently caught the attention of a New York–Boston-based photographer holidaying in the area who asked to shoot it - a recognition of the way architecture can both settle into, and celebrate, its surroundings.

At 3am on the Three Capes Track, I stepped into fog thick enough to blur the bushland beyond. Retakunna Cabin’s communal kitchen stood quietly illuminated, its simple form and timber cladding softened by the mist.

A Home Designed for Connection

At the heart of this design is the idea of connection—connecting with family, nature, and the community. Almost every room in the home enjoys a view of the central pool, which serves as both a visual anchor and a source of calming natural light that brightens the entire space throughout the day.

Large glass corner doors effortlessly slide away, disappearing into timber-clad nibs, creating a seamless flow between the living area and a private, protected courtyard. This seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces blurs the boundaries of the home, inviting the natural world in.

Even the alfresco area opens into the village park, extending the home’s reach beyond its walls and into the vibrant community. It’s a perfect harmony between private living and public connection—a home built not just for today, but for the future of those who live in it.
