It would be fair to say that most home owners have that to hard to fix problems or just out of their financial reach, and don’t think I am any different.
I have been trying to address the wall of death, for 30 years.
The last big wet saw tons of water coming under my home and causing underpinning to the foundations.
I don’t have the funds but simply chip away a bit by bit.
I can only build a retaining wall to 1 metre.
I don’t have the funds to purchase concrete sleepers but there are cheats.
Paint the sleepers this stops mould and adds protection.
Add a post every 1200.
Use galvanised post and All ways add drainage and 20 mm agh stones.
I had no access to machinery and literarily had to hand dig this all out.
I’m not a big guy and used a hydraulic jack to remove the post ..
Thankfully concrete wasn’t invented back then.!!
I added a top to protect the end grain and add reinforcement to the corners.
Only another 18m to go !!!
If your going to build a retaining wall do it once and stick to the Australian standard I see so many retaining walls that fail a few years down the track and will only bite you in the bum and cause grief.

It’s literally holding up a corner of a cabin.
It was so compromised.
Acro propped cabin, stirrup cut out and rotted post trimmed and timber protect added.
New bolts and fixings added.
Please check your footings.!!

This elderly clients asked me to repair their pavers that had moved and the cement edging had cracked and given way.
Old cement removed and pavers re -set and new galvanised edging applied and polymer sand added.
They also had black mould on the side of their home and green paving and black drive way.
All cleaned and client happy.

This young family had a stud wall literally taking up half their garage, now this is removed it really opens up the spa...

This young family had a stud wall literally taking up half their garage, now this is removed it really opens up the space to properly organise and make total use of the space.
The ceiling strangely had insulation which practically did nothing.
Another happy client.🙂

It has a trundle bed so sleeps 3.
Extremely well made and great drawings.

Rotted external small deck removed and replaced, steps sanded and finished in high gloss jarra.
It looks fantastic with the green house colours.

This small snib wall came out looking nice.
Although its H4 I always paint the post going in the ground with timber preserve
And two Coates of paint to give it longevity and stop that mould that eventually happens.
Its only decorative and not load  bearing
So no drainage needed.

Owning a timber home in Bellingen is a bottomless pit, it has high rain, humidity and lots of heat and sun.
Don’t think I’m not a victim to our climate.
This timber deck I built 20 years ago is trashed.
All the joist and bearers are rotten.🫣
The deck is holding on just.
It’s the final repair and just trying to get through the family visit for Xmas.
No idea where I’m going to find the money for this just like you guys.
So here’s what I’ve learned in case your in the same boat and or planning a new deck.
Do it right first time.
1 pick your timber that is not green.
2 Try and source recycled timber that is seasoned and not from a young tree.
(Better grain)
3 use joist and bearer protection.
4 if it’s exposed try not to use merbau
My experience clearly says it rots.
It’s not ethical as taken from South American forest.
Use Australian timbers.
I understand the price is way more expensive but it WILL save you money.
We don’t use decking nails , but stainless steel fixings.
Off set the fixings so the joist don’t end up with a split in the middle.
You paint all the underside first with a water based acrylic.
The builder generally doesn’t do this as it’s costly you do it.
Use a pad edger it’s quick you just swipe and go.
Any way that’s my two bobs worth and I expect some will say differently.

My strangest request this year.
I’m literally at the cemetery walking the cats (dogs)
My phone rings and this lady from Sydney ask me if I could remove a plaque from the where the ashes are kept and realign it.
After sending photos to confirm it was the right person.
Sure it was simple not glued on correctly and had slid down.
Ten minute job, remove plaque clean of old glue and do a proper job.
I didnt even think about the ashes being inside but i said hello.
No charge to the lady and she was extremely great full.
