🌿 The Native Finger Lime - (Citrus australasica)

One of Australia’s most beautiful (and delicious) native plants.

The Native Finger Lime produces slender fruits filled with tiny citrus “pearls” that burst with flavour — sometimes called bush caviar. The foliage is delicate, the fruit colours vary from green to deep pink, and it can make a striking feature plant in the right position.

It prefers well-drained soil and protection from harsh frost, and can work beautifully in smaller gardens or even large pots.

A wonderful example of how native plants can be both ornamental and productive.

I offer on-site consultations in Sydney and remote consultations Australia-wide if you’d like tailored advice for your own native garden. 🌿

This Ivory Curl Tree (Buckinghamia celsissima) is flowering at the moment. It’s a lovely reminder of how rewarding native trees can be.

The flowers are full of nectar and attract birds and insects, and the tree itself makes a beautiful feature when it’s given enough space.

When I’m working with clients, we often look for plants that are both beautiful and useful for wildlife. The right tree can completely change how a garden feels.

If you’re thinking about creating a native garden or attracting more birds to your space, I offer on-site and remote consultations.

Grevillea speciosa, the Red Spider Flower is endemic to the Sydney area and flowers beautifully throughout winter and other times of the year, usually peaking in Spring. A small shrub, it grows to around 1 metre tall, and is great for attracting the smaller native birds such as the Superb Fairy Wren, Eastern Spinebills and New Holland Honeyeaters. The Red Spider Flower grows best on well drained sandy soils, typical of the Hawkesbury sandstone geology of the area. Full sun to part shade is preferred. To encourage bushiness, prune lightly following a flush of flowers.

The Swamp Banksia, (Banksia robur) is perfect for wet soils. Growing to around 2m, it’s flowers begin an iridescent green, aging through yellow to brown. It also responds well to pruning, so it’s easy to create a bushy plant. And being a Banksia the native birds love them!

The beautiful Fringed Wattle (Acacia fimbriata) is in flower at the moment, providing a much need burst of colour during these cold winter days. Admiring the flowers is also the perfect remedy to lift the spirits during this extended lockdown time. The Fringed Wattle, a large shrub or small tree, is fast growing to around 5-8m high. It is wind tolerant, frost tolerant, and can be used for screening or as a feature tree. Also bee and bird attracting, the Fringed Wattle is known to provide food for Superb Fairy Wrens and King Parrots.

Grevillea 'Pink Midget' is a gorgeous low growing dwarf pink spider flower, perfect for providing colour over the winter months and through into Spring and Summer. It grows best in full sun but will tolerate part shade. Growing to around 400mm x 400mm it is easy to find a spot for this plant. It is low maintenance, drought tolerant, and will attract a variety of nectar-eating birds, butterflies and bees. Plant now and it will be all set to grow in spring, which is just around the corner!
