Brom of the week
Lutheria splendens, discovered in 1854 by Jacques Brongniart, was originally classified as Tillandsia Splendens. It was later moved to the genus Vrisesea, where it remained for 160 years until it was given its own genus, named Lutheria, in honour of Harry E. Luther. In Colombia, where it was originally described, it was used as a form of anti-inflammatory and to help relieve skin irritations.
A distinct brom in both foliage and flower, they grow relatively easily in our local conditions, although mine seem to prefer more shade, as they are quick to burn. They grow 2-3ft tall and 1-2ft wide, and with a long-lasting spike, it's a definite favourite.
