The Westbury Garden Club have just held our summer flower show, and unusually for this summer so far it was a very hot day (by Tasmanian standards). We have had so few hot days and so much cloud cover - yet without rain - that very few people have ripe tomatoes and many plants are running behind normal time, but thankfully most exhibitors managed to turn out pristine flowers. The hall in which it is held is air conditioned, or we would have been looking at some very sad wilting blooms. It was a great day with many happy visitors.

I love finding the exotic among the regular exhibits, and this time I wasn't disappointed. The red and yellow bloom and red and pink are definitely only on one plant each, very unusual.

I think someone has told Daisy that increasing blood flow in the brain can enhance cognitive ability, If it works, I'll give it a go too!

We have had another great flower show with the Launceston Horticulture Society, and what an amazing amount of work some volunteers have put into it. This butterfly and another dahlia display outside were outstanding, so much work from growing the dahlias to harvesting then arranging, and so much more from the exhibitors.

It is lilium time, I have these seed grown trumpets in my garden. They are highly fragrant and very tall, a great addition, so I have collected seed to keep more coming on.

I can forgive parrots and wildlife taking a little bit of produce here and there, but the black cockatoos are driving me crazy. Not only have they taken my entire hazelnut crop two years running, they have also now ripped all the green apples from one tree and dropped them onto the ground. Why? Anyway, I am going to cut all my hazelnut trees down to a metre height and net them. See how that goes. Growing food is an ongoing battle!

I love growing plants from seed, sometimes nothing comes up, sometimes I only get one or two, but often when the plants flower it is worth all the effort. This echinacea is a very pleasant reward, the only one that came up but I will definitely save the seed.

I was surprised to suddenly spot the salvia (behind the weeds - ugh), sadly only a short-lived perennial but what a beauty. And I had never considered growing agastache as I didn't think they would survive our frosts, but a neighbour is growing some so I thought I'd give them a try. I have a few different species, the leaves are wonderfully aromatic and they can be used as a flavouring in cooking.

We are about to have a few hot days but nothing compared to what the mainland is about to endure, Terrible for all the people and other life, I hope there are no more fires.

So unable to do much, and the property getting terribly out of hand, I have employed organic gardeners Alex and his partner of AMAX gardening to do all the heavy (and unpleasant) jobs that needed doing, and what a relief it has been to see things happening. They have been a wonderful help.

The hot weather has brought out the colours in the daylilies, especially the pinks. This seedling has apricot tones with pink midribs, looking beautiful today.

A new year, and I hope a good one for all of us. I don't usually bother with new year resolutions, but this year I think I will have to make one; I must try not to do any more stupid things. I have injured my back, and at my age I should have known better, so I will try to take things a bit easier (yeah right!) and follow the lead of those clever ones like Bentley who know how to chill out.

The dahlias are out, I have plenty for sale but I should have had more - the first lot I put out were hit by frost a couple of weeks ago (who said it is summer!) and are now slowly recovering. Bah!

I have planted a tree for the new year in honour of the brave Ukrainians. It was just by luck that I collected seed a few years ago not even knowing what the tree was, but a customer who bought one looked it up and found that it is Ukrainian, his wife comes from Ukraine so it is very special to them both.

I shall now go and lie down in a flower bed. Happy New Year!

Another day, another garden club visit. And just to prove that old gardeners never die, one of the ladies is 103 years old! So wonderful to have them wandering around my garden, but oh dear the weather has not been cooperative - not many flowers, it has been too cold and windy to bring them out in time, but a few that did impress thankfully.

I have had no luck with shrubby salvias in the nursery, it is just too frosty although they do look lovely in the warmer months in my alternative garden which is normally a few degrees warmer. But I do have quite a few herbaceous salvias that thrive and are very rewarding, this Salvia pratensis has very dark flowers, and masses of them - a great plant for the border.

I finally have a dwarf oriental poppy that is not orange, they came from a mixed packet of seed but I am not complaining, the oranges really stand out. Poppies everywhere at the moment, what a treat.

I have just had a great weekend courtesy of the Kentish Garden Club open gardens, and what a lovely garden I spent the weekend in at Claude Road. There is a vast expanse of grass with mature trees, a wonderful view of Mount Roland and a few buildings made of hand split timbers and shingles. I am just sorry that I couldn't visit any of the other gardens, but some people gave me good descriptions of what I was missing!

First day of summer today, and you wouldn't know it. It was very cold to start, now we are having a thunderstorm and tonight we are expecting yet another cold one. My tomatoes, capsicums and cucurbits are sitting in the garden, plainly asking me why I planted them out. We are anticipating one sunny day this week, what a treat that will be!

A big thank you to all the volunteers who work so hard to have these events, and all the owners of the open gardens who work very hard for a long time and welcome people to their gardens.

Here's one for the poppies, three different species out at the moment and the Shirley poppies have produced a huge range of different colours. Unfortunately I can't capture the colour of the oriental poppies at the moment, they are HUGE, and the flowers a real scream-at-you orange, so I've left them out for now. My phone camera just can't handle them!

We are having some welcome rain, but it seems that there are far fewer plants in flower than usual for this time of year, we really haven't had much sunshine and I think the temperatures are lower overall. I am not ungrateful, we are so lucky we do not have the conditions the mainland is currently getting with catastrophic fire conditions in NSW. I hope they get through them unscathed.

It is very hard to believe that summer is only 2 weeks away. I am not game to plant out my tender vegetable plants for fear that they will be cut down by wind or frost. Thankfully my nursery plants are frost hardy and seem to have taken the wind without damage, I can certainly guarantee their hardiness!

I had a lovely day selling plants at the open garden day held by the Latrobe Garden Club,. The garden I was at was absolutely beautiful, a credit to its owners who had obviously put a mammoth effort into getting it look so good. I was particularly impressed with how much they managed to fit into a suburban garden space without making it look overcrowded. Thank you.

So back outside again, into the howling wind. And to apologise to my persistent wrens, I have dug so many grubs for them that I seem to have run out and fussy things that they are, they won't eat worms - not even little ones. You just can't please everyone.

All my plants are taking off now, the grass especially - I have started brushcutting around the veggie garden, and so far have found two long-handled spades, a mattock and several steel droppers!

I have contributed to the Aussie bird count again this year, but it was a little difficult to walk around with my smart phone with a blue wren perched on it demanding that I dig grubs instead. I have become a birds' slave.

I have counted 38 different species of birds on our property, there would be some I haven't identified yet as I can hear them but not see them, and I don't know all the different calls. I suspect that some of them are also wary of census collectors, I seem to see a lot more birds when I am not looking than while I was counting.

I have been madly propagating to prepare for spring shows and markets, so I have masses of stock for anyone looking particularly for cottage garden perennials, now open every Thursday and Friday from 10-4.

I had a lovely visit from members of the Georgetown Garden Club yesterday, they are all so friendly and very understanding of the difficulties in maintaining a weed-free garden! Gardeners are such nice people, thank you.
My little wrens like to keep an eye on me when I am loading up plants for the next market, this little fellow looked mighty scruffy a few weeks ago but now is in full colour. There are now three blue boys and they spend as much time fighting each other as begging from me.
Everywhere I walk in the bush presently there is evidence of echidna activity, holes everywhere and rocks shoved aside, they are regular bulldozers but I rarely see them. I wonder if they are more likely to be out at night?
I found this anemone growing out of the bottom of a pot, it had fallen off a rack, I didn't notice (okay, I pretended I couldn't see it so I wouldn't have to pick it up). Plants can be mighty resilient.

It is raining heavily, but the wind is the worst. I did manage to walk the dogs up our track during a break in the rain, there is damage everywhere. Poor Bentley does not like the conditions, so he retreated to the only safe place during the worst of the storm - under my feet.

So many people rave about the flowering cherries, I do have a few and love them but they are very prone to attack but pear slugs in summer, so look very decrepit unless the slugs are constantly dealt with. I also have crab apples, they are just as brilliant in spring but don't seem to suffer any pests and diseases, and in autumn many have colourful fruit.

The bush is coming to life, birds singing everywhere, flowers and a huge range of orchids. We are so lucky to live here.
