Autumn is actually the best time to reclaim a garden bed that's been taken over.

The soil is still warm enough to work easily, weeds are slowing down, and you've got the whole cooler season to get something established before spring. We've been clearing and preparing beds across Hobart this week, and the difference a few hours of proper work makes is pretty remarkable.

If there's a corner of your garden that needs reclaiming, now's the moment. 🍂

Hobart gardeners, winter's almost here and most gardens aren't ready for it. 🌿

We're Flourish & Bloom Gardening, a local team working across Greater Hobart and Southern Tasmania. After looking after more than 750 gardens through Tasmanian winters, we've put together something we think you'll find genuinely useful.

It's a free Winter Garden Survival Scorecard. Ten quick diagnostic questions, a score out of 20, and a clear picture of where your garden is vulnerable before the cold properly sets in.

We built it because every winter we see the same preventable damage: frost-burn on tender plants that could have been mulched, waterlogged beds that needed drainage sorted in autumn, hedges going into the cold season unpruned and stressed. A ten-minute check now saves a lot of replanting in spring.

Happy to answer any winter prep questions in the comments. 🌱

We get it. Leaf season in Hobart is relentless, and raking and bagging for hours isn't how anyone wants to spend their weekend.

That's where we come in. 🍂

The team at Flourish & Bloom Gardening turned up this week with the trailer, the blowers, and the energy, and left behind a clean, tidy garden that actually looked cared for again.
We work with homeowners across Greater Hobart who want their outdoor spaces to look beautiful without the hard work landing on them.

A hedge trimming job in Lindisfarne, and by the end of it the view of the Derwent was back.

The view had been slowly disappearing for years, and with a few hours' work it was there again, clear as anything.

We installed this garden edge and refreshed the planting bed for a client in Glenorchy, and the result is exactly what good garden maintenance should feel like: tidy, considered, and built to last.

Nicole in Primrose Sands left us this review today, and it genuinely made the team’s day. Restoring a garden that has gotten away from itself takes patience and a good eye; it’s satisfying work when it comes together. Thanks Nicole, we’d love to help again.

Today we pause.

We remember those who served, those who didn't come home, and those who carried the weight of it for the rest of their lives.

The freedom to live quietly, to tend a garden, to build something worth caring for, that didn't come without cost.

Lest we forget.

This backyard came to us as a blank slate in disguise.

To the untrained eye: scrappy lawn, rampant ivy, agapanthus taking over the bed line, a path that's seen better days.

To us: a dozen different possibilities depending on what the owner actually wants from their outdoor space.

- Option one is straightforward, top-dress the lawn, install irrigation, and let it recover properly over a season.
- Option two is a clean reset: agapanthus and ivy out, fresh lawn in.
- Option three is the most exciting: a planted and mulched native garden replacing the lawn entirely, a sitting area where the timber sleepers are now, and the path pressure-cleaned to finish it off.

We're gardeners. We're also visionaries. The two go together.

🌿 International Plant Appreciation Day 🌿

Today we're celebrating the real stars of every garden… the plants themselves.

From hardy natives that thrive in Tasmania’s cool climate, to lush foliage that brings life to outdoor spaces, plants do more than just look beautiful. They create calm, support wildlife, improve wellbeing, and turn ordinary spaces into something truly special.

At Flourish & Bloom Gardening, we feel incredibly lucky to work with plants every day. Watching a garden grow, mature, and flourish over time is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

🌱 We'd love to hear from you
What plants do you love most in your garden?
Is there a favourite tree, a resilient native, or a plant that brings you joy every time you see it?

Tell us in the comments and share the plant appreciation 🌿
