Exon, a house for people who like curves, sunlight, timber, texture, plants, long lunches, quiet mornings and pretending they don’t have too many things on.

Soft where it can be. Precise where it needs to be.

Rendered curves, pale timber, native planting and a few very large openings doing the heavy lifting.

Not minimal exactly. More like calm, with a pulse.

May the 4th was with us at VCAT yesterday. Planning approval secured for seven three bedroom townhouses in Brighton East, the next step in the Kindred story. A Neutra inspired scheme of folded plate roofs, double height voids and sinuous gardens, underpinned by a rigorous response to the Housing Choice and Transport Zone, ultimately prevailed.

Heard in VCAT’s polished new rooms on La Trobe Street, where sharp outcomes still wrestle with blunt, loosely defined standards. Credit to the council officers for engaging constructively across the table.

The process remains fundamentally broken, but we’re thrilled, and relieved, to have the result in hand.
