Meet NJ!!

Having undertaken a career change into architecture, Natasha came to Chalmers Partners Architects with a broad understanding of people and people management.

Natasha’s previous role as a registered nurse provides another perspective of stress, management, and client interaction. Her ability to understand empathize with people and the environment they live in is key to dissecting design solutions.

Natasha is passionate about sub-tropical design, resilient and residential architecture, heritage architecture and is passionate about the pen to paper approach of design and architecture.

Natasha is a believer in the power of social architecture as a driver for change in human well-being. With excellent communication skills both verbally and on paper, Natasha provides the human scale design that is often missing in architecture.

The courtyard house is underway! We are quite excited, as this year has started out with some amazing clients and equally amazing residential projects. Including this one - currently named the courtyard house (formally, yet to be named).

This is an interesting one. Whilst a large site, the house still has neighbors on two sides. The brief was to create an inward looking space that provided shelter, openness, light and shadow. Most rooms were required to look out onto this space, with the greater build turning its back on the street. For no other reason than to maintain control of the families environment.

How do we work?

CPA was established in 2017 as a way to explore and improve the process of design. We established a remote office in early 2018, rode through covid with varying work from home models, and moved to a 4 day work week nearly three years ago. Whilst maintaining our efficient delivery of projects. We wanted to stay small, and have done so.

CPA uses a range of tools, from hand sketching, model making, and collaging (both digital and physical) through to AI driven process, which allows us to create quickly.

Our early schematics start out anywhere from sketches to renders, we then reverse engineer the options with the client, allowing them to direct the project in any way they feel comfortable. This includes testing multiple designs and spatial connections in a virtual environment, or, rolling back to good old butter paper! We use this technology as a graphic representation, meaning we are able to test multiple ideas quickly, allowing our clients to visualize their spaces early in the project.

This means our design methodology is flexible and can be customized to suit any client and any typology.

Bamboo and Shoji. Two products that we (I) have a very soft spot for. This is a slightly different take on Shoji. We have taken the Shoji screen and broken it down into a sort of lantern, behind the bed.

Instead of table lamps, the paper screens are boxed out behind and lit, lighting up like a lantern. To replace the globe (or the paper), the panel lifts off for access.

One of our amazing clients has found a dream block of land about 3 hours South-West of Brisbane. The site is constrained, with plenty of granite, a bit of a slope, and quite a bit of forest/bushland. However, we are able to locate and design a small, off grid cabin suitable for up to 6 people. The design consists of a bedroom and kitchen/living and amenities on ground, with a larger communal bunk room on the mezzanine floor above.
