Camellia Hiemalis. A rare full blossom this close to winter when most other plants are holding back stores for winter... this one is out in bloom.

APPEARANCE : Small evergreen shrubs to 2m with beautiful displays of flowers in autumn and early winter. Elegant deep rosy red flowers blended with darker red at the edges; cup shaped, with golden stamens at the centre. Camellia hiemalis is a cross between sasanqua and japonica camellias, giving you the best of both worlds - sasanqua's dense foliage, early blooms, and sun tolerance, japonica's neat flowers and cold tolerance.

USE FOR : Ideal as a specimen tree, feature plant, or in groups with other Camellias and acid lovers like gardenia and azalea. Can be used as a hedge or screen and espalier.

CLIMATE : Will come through light frost once establish

PLANTING : Sunny or partly shaded position with morning or afternoon sun. Plant in a free draining soil which is medium to acidic pH, rich in organic matter. A potting mix rich in humus is ideal, added at the time of planting.

CARE : Mulch and water well, prune after flowering and fertilise in Spring.

MATURE HEIGHT & WIDTH : 3m H x 2m W.

Yellow Buttons (Chrysocephalum Apiculatum Ranosissimum) is one of my absolute favourites. Hardy, native, good for pollinators and creates a great environment for smaller birds and lizards to hang out in. Love that desert feel in the garden!

My biggest regret with the back garden is only planting tube stocks. Yes, they were easy and cheap... but I'm only starting to reap the rewards of plants now, a couple of years later. If I'd spent a few more dollars on more established plants I could have been enjoying things like this Pink Gaura longer... because it's absolutely stunning! Pollinator attracting, native, hardy and beautiful. Winner.

Merry Christmas my friends! Thank you for a wonderful year of support. It's been so lovely being a part of so many of your journeys over the past twelve months.
