With high construction costs threatening the viability of this apartment reno our clients made the ambitious decision to manage the job themselves. Congratulations on pulling it off, and a big thanks to for their patience, reliably fine work, and for being all round great guys.

We’re going to have to get creative to make projects affordable(ish) over the coming years. It’ll be up to architects, builders AND clients.

This is the start of a little project we’ve had in mind for a while now to collect palettes of colours as they occur naturally in some of our favourite places. With some tweaks they might inform colour selection for future design projects but if nothing else it’s nice to zoom in once in a while.

Notes from site. Here we’re using fibreglass reinforced plastic where access is poor and longevity is a priority and hardwood for the visible bits. This is ‘s Fibre Frame for the deck structure and for most of the retaining with a hardwood top course. A compromise between practicalities and aesthetics. We’re loving being able to bring the dirt up so close to our deck structure.

Hardwood can be added in as required - sometimes we prefer it on the outer joists for a better connection for balustrade posts or in this case as a trimmer that will allow us to recess stair stringers into the timber.

Nothing flash here but we’re really enjoying this little landscaping/deck job and it’s nice to be back on the tools.

Too much sitting at a desk drafting lately. This week we’re digging a whole lot for a landscaping and deck project and wishing excavators were skinnier than they are. At least it’s a good excuse to try out the 2 man auger.

We’ve been enjoying using fibreglass on decks lately. For this one we’re back at it with ‘s Fibre Frame and also testing out the SuperSleeper retaining system.

This morning we’re testing whether or not a 6m tall flame tree will survive transplanting. Nice day for it! Its new home is beside the new boardwalk in our ongoing cohousing project.
