The composition of this room sets it apart from the lighter, more traditional spaces of the original home. Dark timber linings and a skylight overhead create a layered play of light and shadow. While retained elements, including thresholds and the original window frame and balustrade, anchor the addition within the existing fabric.
Over time, the space has taken on its own personal character, with our son’s paintings and everyday objects quietly binding the space, making it feel both considered and lived in.

The heart of our home.

A year on from completing this small addition to our home and studio, the dining room has quietly become the heart of our house.

What was once an external deck now connects the living room, kitchen, and studio, bringing the whole place together in a way the original plan never quite allowed.

Lined in recycled hardwood and lit from above, the space shifts throughout the day, going from darker and enclosed at times to bright and open at others.

As both home and workplace, this house has been shaped gradually over generations, and this room feels like a natural continuation of that story.

Hurley Architects designed this bespoke home as a homage to the passive technologies of the classic Queenslander. We reinterpreted the homestead with a contemporary floor plan, and visited the inspired logic of the past to deliver an exemplar for modern rural design.

Red House, Stairway—
Shifting from burnished concrete to timber—anchoring the entry with weight before ascending lightly through the void. A deliberate material transition that defines the spatial rhythm between floors in Red House.

Causey House is progressing nicely as we approach completion. The elevated causeway—a subtle yet thoughtfully crafted feature—has taken shape, offering glimpses of its form from the street as it bridges the cottage’s original character with its contemporary extension.

Special thanks to Beebe Construction for their meticulous craftsmanship in bringing this vision to life.

Stay tuned for the final stages!

🍃 Land and Human Medicine Discovered

Research on the gathered plants revealed their healing and gastronomic qualities. Trees like Coastal Wattle and Cheese Tree are vital for rehabilitating coastal hinterlands. The client’s family enjoyed experimenting with the colours and textures from what they collected. The edible Geebung berries were a delightful find during our walk.
