Always great to visit projects a few years after completion with the intended garden interface taking shape. In this case the entry which creates a special journey up from the street through a steep garden within a tight setback to the new front door. Creating a meaningful transition from the city to the inner sanctuary of the house is something we always consider.

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Caitlin McDonnell to Associate at Bligh Graham Architects. Pleased to share some images of a new house on an acreage site we are working on. The triangle shape responds to site opportunities and constraints whilst creating a strong form in the semi-rural setting. At its heart is an intimate courtyard - a counterpoint to the expansive landscape. Sustainability is a key driver with hempcrete walls integrated along with other supportive material choices. We have called it the Cuneate House - meaning wedge shaped:).

We are very happy that the Hakea House was also recognised in last nights Australian Institute of Architects Awards Program at the Brisbane region level in Alterations and Additions category. It will now be considered for an award in the upcoming state awards. Our media summary for this project reads: The Hakea House is named after a native that blooms after fire. Tragically this project came about after the existing house was largely reduced to ash in 2021 by fire only months after the completion of a rear extension (by Bligh Graham Architects). The house consists of three portions - the front mostly rebuilt Queenslander cottage, the surviving treehouse-like rear extension, and a significant new two-storey ‘middle’ that overlooks the existing pool. The middle portion negotiates between the form and geometry of the traditional cottage, and the playful angular rear ‘treehouse’ that folds around trees and is wrapped in a vine mesh screen. The overall ensemble orchestrates a distinctly Paddington journey from street out into and above the garden with unfolding views over the gully and beyond. At its heart is a dramatic double-height north facing rainforest garden court overlooked by the principle living, sitting and dining spaces of the house.

We were thrilled that the Sherwood River House was recognised in the Australian Institute of Architects Brisbane Regional Awards in the Interiors category. The muse of this project was the clients Australian art collection. Careful consideration of the ideal location for these treasured pieces laid the groundwork for the feel of each space. Colour palettes for each area were selected to highlight the artwork, and then new and existing furniture and decorative objects were curated to complement these. Each of these spaces was given new definition through the articulation of the existing homogenous interior to a series of rooms by weaving through new deep timber thresholds. These were accompanied by a series of timber moments in the form of seats, desks and cabinetwork that were woven into the existing interior. The planning changes also worked to improve natural daylighting and cross ventilation, along with opening up to the treed gully and river views. The project creates a home for people and art that draws the Australian bush deep into the client’s private world.
