In the depths of far west NSW, one of Australia's rarest reptiles hides.

For the past 25 years, researchers have been studying the kungaka, a rare skink that has only now been formally identified as its own distinct species.

Found in the Mutawinji National Park, kungaka means "hidden one" and was named by Wiimpatja, the traditional owners of the land about 130 kilometres north-east of Broken Hill.

Tuesday was a day of intense, record heat across parts of Australia's interior, with maximum and minimum temperatures 12 to 18 °C above the October average.

Both Queensland and New South Wales saw statewide temperature records broken for October – Birdsville reached 46.1 °C in Queensland, and Bourke reached 44.8 °C in New South Wales.

Today, the heat will move east towards the New South Wales coast with another day of temperatures 12 to 16°C above average.

Both Sydney and Newcastle are expected to reach 39 °C today which combined with strong winds is leading to extreme fire dangers.

A big win for a bird that looks like it doesn’t care. Congratulations to the Tawny Frogmouth, the 2025 Bird of the Year. 🏆

One of nature’s ultimate introverts finally gets the recognition it deserves. 🙌

The Tawny Frogmouth is a master of disguise, blending into tree branches where they can sit motionless for hours. They can be spotted in city parks and bushland right across Victoria.

Next time you’re out, look closely for the people’s champion – but we can’t promise they’ll be just as happy to see you. 👁️ 👁️
