Today I found myself back behind a stump grinder.
Just me, a machine, and a customer.
Eleven years ago, that’s exactly how this business started.
These days I spend most of my time quoting, managing staff, solving problems, putting out spot fires, and trying to steer two growing companies in the right direction.
It’s a privilege, but if I’m honest, it can also be exhausting.
Running a business can be lonely. It can consume your thoughts, your energy, and sometimes even your passion.
Lately I’ve felt a bit beaten up by it all.
Then this morning happened.
I turned up to help an elderly lady with a small job. We had a chat, I completed the work, did a few extra things while I was there, and drove away knowing I’d made her day a little easier.
And it reminded me of something I’d forgotten.
The reason I started this business was never the trucks, the equipment, the growth, or the numbers.
It was to help people.
To solve problems.
To make someone’s day a little better.
Sometimes when life gets overwhelming, the answer isn’t pushing harder.
Sometimes it’s simply going back to where it all started and reconnecting with your “why.”
Today was a good reminder of mine.
