Warning: scammers are using legitimate licensed locksmith business names to trick the public.

The scammers use a legitimate business’s name but link through to their own website and trick customers into engaging scam locksmith services.

A locksmith, possibly unlicensed, will show up to the job, often damaging the lock, and threatening the customer into paying excessive fees.

Warning signs:

1. The business name on your search engine MUST match the website URL
2. Look for a Master licence number on the website BEFORE contacting them
3. Only allow a licensed locksmith to complete your job and ask to see their licence when they turn up.
4. Be wary of anyone demanding cash.

Bec had just moved to Australia from New Zealand and locked herself out of her house and was charged an exorbitant $954 to get back inside. She said she knew something was off when the person she called arrived, and she was scared he was going to completely destroy the lock. She still feels traumatised by the experience.

This is very much an issue within NSW aswell, don’t become a victim and always make sure your security specialist is properly licensed and insured.

Recent arrests by our Licensing Services officers have prompted them to join forces with the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia to remind businesses and homeowners why it is important to ensure your ‘Security Installer’, or Locksmith, is appropriately licensed, and thus security vetted by WA Police Force.

People recently charged in relation to providing Locksmith services without being licensed to do so had allegedly committed those offences across the metropolitan area, however it is believed there could be other unlicensed operators advertising their services across the state.

It is important you consider who you are trusting with your most valuable assets.
