The seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces is fundamental to our design approach. Living and sleeping zones are conceived as extensions of the landscape, where thresholds dissolve and architecture opens effortlessly to light, air, and garden. Outdoor rooms become carefully considered companions to the interiors — spaces that provide refuge, connection, and a heightened experience of dwelling within the natural environment.

Within Tallowood, the bathroom design intent was for an immersive experience with nature — a space where the boundaries between architecture and landscape are intentionally blurred. Framed by glazing on three sides, the shower extends directly toward the surrounding melaleuca forest, creating the sensation of bathing within the forests' filtered light and native foliage. Soft green tiles reinforce this relationship to nature, whilst warm lighting, gold tapware and a sculptural bath introduce a subtle layer of refinement and understated luxury.

The contrasting textures and tones of Kookaburra House, recently sold to new owners who also happen to be previous clients of Davis Architects! It was a pleasure to revisit this project and see it settling in so beautifully.

At the heart of Tallowood, the kitchen was designed as a central communal space that anchors the home and supports an effortless flow of daily life. The island bench becomes a natural gathering point, seamlessly connecting the dining space to the outdoor entertaining areas and garden beyond.

A concealed butler’s pantry allows the functional workings of the kitchen to be suppressed, reinforcing the calm and minimal architectural expression of the space. Northern light enhances the warmth and tactility of the oak joinery and flooring, while the bold marble island, gold sink and tapware introduce richness and depth without overwhelming the restrained material palette.

We especially appreciate how this space demonstrates the valuable collaboration between , and ourselves — where architecture, craftsmanship and material choices unite to achieve a highly successful result.

At Tallowood, the entertaining spaces were carefully orchestrated to transform a highly constrained site into a series of calm, light-filled outdoor rooms. Bordered by neighbouring properties on two sides and a natural melaleuca landscape to the rear, the design responds with a layered approach to privacy, orientation and spatial openness.

The plunge pool and entertaining deck are positioned to capture northern light while maintaining a strong sense of seclusion and retreat. Carefully framed views, integrated landscaping and subtle shifts in level soften the boundaries of the site, allowing the spaces to feel expansive despite the compact footprint. The result is an outdoor environment that feels both connected to the coastal bushland setting and protected from its suburban context — a quiet balance of openness, intimacy and resort-style living.

Tallowood Byron Bay is a home of gradual revelation. Its restrained and understated dark exterior conceals a rich spatial experience within, where volume, light and materiality unfold progressively throughout the three-level design. Carefully curated natural materials ground the architecture within its coastal setting, complementing the raw beauty of the landscape while reinforcing a sense of warmth, permanence and calm.

The experience of arrival should be carefully choreographed. Subtle changes in level, integration with landscape and a sense of restraint create a measured transition from exterior to interior. Concealment and understatement heighten the experience, allowing the architecture to gradually reveal itself.

Job complete! Forming the back half of a two-lot subdivision in the heart of Byron Bay, Somerset embraces the essence of life in a subtropical climate. The "L" shaped form of the house is simple and considered, with shapes and spaces positioned to maximise passive design and ease of indoor-outdoor living.

Often, it is the more intimate moments that give a larger home its depth. A calibrated balance between openness and enclosure allows the architecture to breathe, while moments of compression foster a sense of retreat. Subtle shifts in level and a considered integration with the landscape enrich the spatial sequence — elevating the everyday experience of the home.

Less is definitely more in this bathroom design. A study in restraint, where material and form are reduced to their essentials. A unified palette of black tile, basin, cabinetry and bath creates a calm, immersive atmosphere, while the inclusion of an overhead skylight allows natural light to filter in—softening the darkness and animating the space. Less becomes a deliberate act, shaping a quiet, grounded retreat from the outside world.
