We have a special meeting on Saturday 8th August - starting at 1pm - open to all interested people

Venue: Hambledon House Community Centre
177 Bruce Hwy, Edmonton
If street parking is full, make use of parking space Ravizza close and walk in through the back gate of the centre

We will start with our Cairns and District Beekeepers Association AGM.
All committee positions will be spilled, so anyone interested in joining the committee - please let me know before the meeting. I would encourage you to consider this as the club is filling an important role in our region in encouraging new beekeepers, informing all beekeepers and providing a fantastic and knowledgeable network for us all to take good care of our bees and their produce. Positions on the committee are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and General member. Meetings are 4 times a year.

We are then very fortunate to have two eminent speakers.
Ben Oldroyd and Madeleine Beekman are retired scientists and currently live in our region. They worked for Sydney university and they have a very strong background in social insect biology and Varroa management (and in particular, miticide resistance development in honeybees). They will cover topics about actual/practical Varroa management in the hive and also Asian honeybees in FNQ. Ben and Madeleine are highly regarded as authorities in their field and we will all have a lot to learn and gain by having them with us.

We have been informed that the new incursion is devastating beehives in the South East of Queensland, some beekeepers are having 70% losses from this new incursion of Varroa Mite that is resistant to treatments.

I would highly recommend that any Queen purchases from South East Queensland be paused, if and I say IF, it is absolutely necessary, the Queen must be closely inspected and the escorts that come with the queen must be killed before they ae introduced to a hive.
