You know that Devils Ivy indoor plant you’ve got that’s suppose to bring you good luck and happiness. This is how it grows in the tropics. The heat and the humidity makes the leaves grow so much bigger and they split and look almost like a Monstera.

It’s amazing how things grow bigger in the tropics. We find this with trees we sell at the nursery too. We give a Sydney height knowing they grow much bigger up north where the growing season is longer.

I was tempted to take a cutting, but the leaves would probably revert to smaller size. It’s a beauty isn’t it.

I met a North Queensland Nursery Industry Legend yesterday when I called into Limberlost Garden Centre, which is in the suburb of Freshwater, just north of Cairns.

John Hughes is the long-time driving force behind Limberlost Garden Centre. Under his leadership, Limberlost grew from a local Cairns nursery into one of Australia’s most respected garden centres, particularly for tropical plants.

I bumped into him just on closing time and we became friends straight away. Turns out he follows me on Facebook and he’s also a lover of trees. He has beautiful mature trees growing in his nursery.

I was particularly interested in a native Crepe Myrtle tree that I’ve seen growing as a street tree around Cairns. John helped me identify the tree and he seems to think that it might grow in Sydney, so I bought a tree.

It’s often called “The Palmer River Crepe Myrtle” and it has bigger leaves and flowers than traditional varieties. I’m very excited about this tree because I think gardeners would love to grow a Native Crepe Myrtle.

I’ll grow the tree in our nursery and plant it out in the garden, so we can watch it grow. I think there are so many beautiful native trees that haven’t really been discovered yet by NSW gardeners. These tropical native trees have amazing flowers and foliage, so if they survive the cold, we should be planting them.

Check out the photos in comments.
Nice meeting you John.

I’m in Cairns, and today we travelled to The Atherton Tablelands. The famous Curtain Fig Tree lives here, it’s also called a Strangler Fig. I’ve heard a lot about this tree, it was mesmerising.

Like other Strangler Figs, it began life high in another tree, it sends roots down to the ground, and gradually envelopes its host. The spectacular “curtain” of aerial roots, hangs about 15 metres to the ground.

The Curtain Fig is estimated to be several hundred years old (our guide said 800 years) and is one of the most impressive examples of the Strangler Fig growth habit in Australia.

This tree reminded me of The Avatar Tree in the movie. It’s pretty incredible how it gets started.

1. A bird or other animal deposits a fig seed in a crack or branch of another tree.
2. The seed germinates as an epiphyte (a plant growing on another plant).
3. Roots grow downward toward the soil while the fig expands around the host tree.
4. Over many years, the fig’s roots and trunk can surround the host, competing for light, water, and nutrients.
5. The host tree may eventually die and decay, leaving a hollow center inside the fig.

Strangler figs are important in tropical ecosystems because their fruit feeds many animals year-round, making them a classic keystone species in many rainforests.

They are growing everywhere here in Cairns, you don’t have to travel far to find them, there’s a beauty in town.

Cairns is beautifully landscaped using Native trees from this part of the world and tropical trees from around the world.

Yesterday I found a Native Crepe Myrtle tree that they grow as street trees up here. I’ve bought one to plant in Campbelltown just to see how it grows. You’re going to love this tree.

Ha ha I’ve gone to Cairns to escape the cold. I’ll be sending you photos of some big trees up here. It’s the tree capital of the world.

Do you have a wall or fence in a sunny spot where you might be able to grow a climbing rose? David Austin has released a new Climbing Rose into Australia called “James Galway”.

This Climbing Rose has huge petalicious roses that have a magnificent fragrance. Your blank wall could become a floral fragrance factory. This fast growing climber will cover 2-3ms of fence in a hurry. It will start to flower in late October and it will flower for 9 months.

To make your climbing rose grow faster dig Tim’s Cow manure into your soil. This will revitalise your soil, break down clay and attract worms into your garden. Organic fertilisers like Tim’s Cow manure make your plants so healthy, they are able to fight off pests and diseases.

We have 20 “James Galway” Climbing Rose bushes in our nursery today. We have a huge selection of David Austin Roses but they always sell out fast.

I’m in a bus and I’m seeing Sugarcane growing out through the windows. It’s reminded me of a story that made me laugh.

We were doing our Potting mix trial at the nursery and I got a phone call from a guy from Far North Queensland. He had the slow Queensland drawl, I started to smile, he’d heard about our potting mix trial, and he wanted to know why we weren’t using his potting mix.

Mate I’ve never heard of your potting mix, we just bought the Australian Standard Premium mixes that were available here.

“Well you should be trialling my mix, the gardeners around here tell me it’s great, we sell a mile of it, Bunnings sell it for $3.99 up here.”

I nearly had palpitations, $3.99!!!! Mate what’s in it? You must get what ever’s in it, for free.
“Well we sort of do get it for free, we are right next door to the sugarcane factory, we get the bi product, we compost it, and put it in bags, Bunnings sells heaps.”

Well have you grown anything in it? “What do you mean? The gardeners love the stuff, we sell it by the truck load.”

Our potting mix trial has already started but if you want, you can courier me a bag and I’ll grow plants in it. “I’ll organise that, you’re going to love this stuff.”

It turned up weeks later it cost $48.00 just to courier one bag to us. I did as promised, I put holes in the back for drainage, cut out 4 patches on the front and planted Cos Lettuce. They got watered over head by our sprinklers, the plants didn’t grow a new leaf. They just didn’t grow.

Isn’t that interesting, he thought his product was fabulous because it sold, and because it sold, gardeners must love it.

This is what’s killing the Nursery Industry. You’d think the people who are making the mixes would be growing plants in them all the time. You think they are gardeners don’t you? They aren’t, they make potting mix and they put it in bags. They let you do the growing, when the plants don’t grow you blame yourself.
You’re a brown thumb.

This is a great story, I remember when they discovered that Italians lived longer, they put it down to the Mediterranean diet. But when scientists went to visit some of these oldies they discovered that they got up early, they went outside, they grew things, they were always bending, lifting, digging, watering and watching plants grow. They didn’t have time to die.
They were too busy being alive.

I had a friend coming over last night so I thought I’d make him a curry. I only had 15 minutes to prepare it because I was going to do the Park Run in Camden. I don’t run.

I’m a walker but I moved very fast to prepare this Curry. Let’s call it The Fast Curry!!!!

In the bottom of The Slow cooker I put Chuck steak 1.5kgs cut up into chunks. Dust with Plain Flour. Then add 1x Onion, 1x Celery stick, 1x Eggplant, 1x Leek, 1x Lemon, Handful of Dried Apricots, Handful of Sultanas, 2x handfuls of dry Chick peas. 3x Table spoons of Curry powder, 2x Chillies, 5x Tomatoes, 3x Anchovies.
1x Big Can of Tomatoes. Pink salt, Black pepper.

Cook all day on low. Then stir in Greek Yogurt until you like the colour. Serve with Dollop of Greek Yogurt and Cucumber and white or brown rice.

I’ve fallen in love with Chickpeas, they are chewy and amazing, they could replace the meat easily. I ate the Lemon skin and all. It was delicious. Of course you cut everything up.

I dropped an entire bulb of Garlic in.
I didn’t peel it, I’m very rough.
See comments for finished dish.

I get my Curry powder from Greenvalley Spices. This was the Malaysian curry. It’s not hot, the chillies give you the heat. This serves at least 6-8 people.

You’ll save so much money you can buy more plants. I added Woustershire sauce too.
Check spelling.

I’ve always loved the name Emily, it rolls off your tongue like a rhyme, all the Emily’s I’ve met have always been beautiful. So you can imagine how beautiful this rose called “Emily Brontë” must be.

This beautiful double flowering David Austin rose is petalicious with the most amazing fragrance. It will make your nose happy. Pick a bunch of flowers and bring them inside to make your house smell nice.

We have a great selection of fragrant David Austin roses in the nursery today. It’s such a beautiful day why don’t you come for a drive.

This exceptionally beautiful rose was named after Emily Brontë to celebrate the bicentenary of the novelist’s birth. It’s one of David Austin’s most fragrant roses so you need to find room for this one.
