How good is a cool season lawn in the Spring!!

We’ve been very busy getting all of the Spring treatments done for all of our regulars. At the moment we’re doing grub prevention, along with bio stimulant and soil wetting agents. This lawn was fertilised a couple weeks ago, and you can see how happy it’s looking.

Here is a perfect comparison of a lawn that is cared for, and a grass area that is left to it’s own devices.

On the right is a lawn belonging to one of our client’s who joined us earlier this year. Over the past couple of months it has had:

🌱 W**d treatment
🌱 Grub prevention
🌱 Bio stimulant
🌱 Soil wetting agent
🌱 Biologically based granular fertiliser

All of this helps to strengthen the grass for the stresses of the climate, and keeps it looking lush all year.

On the left is a government verge that survives on hope and rainwater.

Winter is a good time to start building nutrition and good habits, so that when Springtime rolls around, you and your lawn are ahead of the game.

Thank you to for coming through and helping out with this one. And thanks for the Stubby holder!

This lawn was renovated and manually seeded back in Spring. Unfortunately, some irrigation issues (now repaired) caused some areas of the seeds to become dislodged, which led to some patchy spots.

The access to this lawn isn’t easy, so rather than wrestle with tools and stairs again, the decision was made to spray the area out and hydroseed the new lawn. This way the seeds will be more stable, and the client can enjoy their lawn sooner.

Things might not always go exactly to plan, but we will always do our best to find a solution.

If you need an area hydro seeded, give Ben at Greenfingers a call.

A nice little makeover.

We prepared this job and had ACT Spray Seeding come and spray 100% tall fescue.

Really looking forward to seeing this one grow, and to be taking care of it going forward.

This was a fun little project.

The owners had recently laid Santa Ana Couch. The soil had settled a lot, and with the surrounding hard-scapes, the unevenness was really magnified.

It also needed irrigation, which required a lot of thought, due to the numerous obstacles which we wanted to keep as dry as possible.

We dug some trenches, installed irrigation, did some aerating, and gave the whole area a heavy top dress with sand.

We would normally prefer to use a sandy loam or other soil type. But the levels being as they were, sand was our best option.

We then fertilised, did a grub prevention treatment with , along with soil wetting agent and bio stimulant.

Now the client can set the irrigation timer, and sit back and watch the lawn fill in over the next couple of weeks.

We’ll be back regularly to treat the lawn and make sure it remains happy and healthy

This is a perfect example of what happens when someone lays turf and expects it to look after itself.

We were asked to come and asses this lawn today. Needless to say, it going to need more than a bit of fertiliser to get it looking good.

It would appear that the previous owners may have laid some turf when selling the house. But there was no irrigation installed, and this patch never had a chance.

As with many things in life, lawns need a certain amount of upkeep to keep them happy and healthy. If you’re installing a lawn, please install irrigation while you’re at it. The bit of extra effort and cost upfront will save you many headaches later on.

And of course, when it comes to the regular healthcare of the turf, is just a phone call away.

A few from before, during and after this nice little lawn install from this week.

There was a bit of work in setting up a new perimeter with timber sleepers, but the result was quite satisfying. We also installed a basic pop-up irrigation system, so the client can do the most important part easily.

Although we generally prefer seeding to turf, winter isn’t a great time for sowing grass seeds. So when the client needs it done, turf is the only way to go.

The job is always made easier with the beautiful soil from . Thanks to for the referral.

A couple little cool season renovations today. The smaller one had no machine access, so had to be core aerated and de-thatched by hand 🥵.

It is a 100% chewings fescue lawn though, so it will be exciting to see how it comes up.

The other one was a Canberra blend verge which has been properly neglected. A quick spruce up with Perenjial rye grass to get it looking good for the house to go on the market.

If your cool season lawn needs a biting TLC, now is the perfect time.

Following on from our post a few weeks ago.

This is the small verge lawn we renovated. Everything is coming along nicely, now (see the last 3 photos). But this is a good opportunity do illustrate the importance of good watering.

We did the reno, then returned 2 weeks later to find most of the lawn had taken, except for one area. We knew one of the sprinkler heads had been playing up. So a quick check revealed that it was blocked up. So that spot just wasn’t getting watered.

The fix was quick and easy. But this really highlights the importance of checking your irrigation system from time to time.

I have had clients wondering why their established lawn has gone patchy all of a sudden. More often than not, it’s because of a fault or dead battery in an irrigation controller.

In the car world they say “the cheapest parts to replace cause the biggest headaches”.

Same goes here. A five dollar battery, or a twenty dollar sprinkler head can leave you with a dead area of your lawn.

Checking your system a couple times a year should keep everything under control. And if you need any help, we’re glad to step in.
