Let's talk open-plan living and dining spaces...

In an open-plan renovation, the biggest mistake is failing to "zone" your spaces. If you don't define the dining area, it just feels like a table stuck in the middle of a hallway.

To make your layout bulletproof, use these three tactics:

💡Lighting: Drop a pendant light over the centre of the table. It creates a "ceiling" for the dining zone and draws the eye down.

🍴Floor definition: Use a rug or a change in floor direction to physically border the area.

🪑The "Squeeze" test: Ensure there’s a clear circulation path. If guests have to tuck in their chairs for someone to walk past to the kitchen, the design is trash.

A beautiful home is functional - get your builder involved at the early concept stage to ensure the zones actually work.

Keeping the soul of a home while bringing it into the modern age is a fine balancing act. If you go too modern, you lose the history; if you don't go far enough, you lose the functionality.

Our Weston project is a masterclass in character retention. Here is how we extended this home while honouring its original character.

♻️ Modern performance, character-filled soul:
We didn't just add space; we duplicated the original roof pitch to ensure the extension felt like a natural evolution. The traditional style windows were replaced with high-performance double glazing, maintaining the classic aesthetic while significantly boosting thermal comfort.

🔗 Seamless integration:
To help the home settle into its surroundings, we incorporated a new double garage below the existing floor level. This added modern convenience without disrupting the street presence.

🌟 The polished finish:
The entire home was rendered, painted, and re-tiled. This unified the old and new sections into one seamless, polished residence that looks like it has always been there.

🤝 The secret to a seamless extension or renovation:
The best results happen when the builder, architect, and client collaborate from the very first sketch. This ensures your vision is feasible, functional, buildable and beautiful before a single shovel hits the ground.

One of the great successes of our project is how well the home fits into the streetscape.

While this typical 80s home in Canberra’s south was stripped back to its bones and significantly extended, we worked closely with Baxter Design to ensure it remained settled amongst its surroundings.

By keeping the existing ground floor largely unchanged and setting the contemporary upper-floor extension back from the front of the house, we managed to create a spacious family home that respects the character of the street.

Inside, the layout was reconfigured to harness the northern sun, creating a seamless flow from the new mudroom through to the open-plan living areas. It’s a complete transformation that supports modern family life while respecting the home's original footprint.

Feasible. Functional. Buildable. Beautiful.

A huge happy 18th birthday to our superstar apprentice, Cooper! 🥳

Cooper has been a part of the New Spaces team for two years now. He joined us as a fresh-faced school-based apprentice and has been full-time for the last 6 months.

Watching him grow from a quiet kid into a skilled 2nd-year apprentice has been a highlight for us. He is a dedicated learner, hard worker, and is incredibly switched on. The future is looking so bright for our future focused Coop 😎

Enjoy the celebrations tonight, but don't forget, you've got tech in the morning 🍻

A home doesn't just feel like "yours" because of the furniture you choose—it's the small, thoughtful details tucked into the architecture that make the biggest difference.

Think about the way light hits a curved wall, the texture of a custom bedhead, or even the placement of a power point so it’s exactly where you need it, rather than an afterthought.

These little touches are what turn a standard renovation into a space that feels personal and distinctive. But these details don't happen by accident.

The best results come when your architect, builder, and consultants are all on the same page from the very first sketch. When we collaborate early in the piece, we can stress-test those "big ideas" to make sure they’re actually buildable and functional before the first hammer is swung.

It’s about making sure the beautiful design you fall in love with on paper is exactly what you get to live in.

There’s a specific moment in a renovation where the floor plan finally breathes. 🌿✨

By installing bifold doors, we’ve completely removed the barrier between the interior and the deck.

This design allows the living room to physically expand outward, creating a single, cohesive space that feels twice as large the moment the glass is retracted.

Whether you’re catching a cross-breeze or simply want a home that feels more open and connected to the air, a seamless threshold changes the entire energy of a room.

The Statement Splashback 🌟

The ultimate way to elevate your kitchen design is by extending your benchtop material directly up the splashback.

👆 Pictured here is a stunning high-performance porcelain surface, offering the timeless, creamy beauty of Taj Mahal quartzite natural stone with a more durable and lower maintenance alternative

Why this works:

✨️ Seamless luxury: It creates a monolithic, uninterrupted flow of material that exudes custom luxury.

🎨 Design cohesion: Using the same slab material connects the benchtop, splashback, and island, turning the kitchen into a single, cohesive design piece.

🧼 Easy maintenance: Without grout lines, cleaning is effortlessly, helping to maintain that sleek look.

Are you team "feature tiles", "stone" or maybe a combination!?

Where the kitchen meets the living room 🍸

Open shelving is more than just storage; it's a design opportunity. Placed next to the main kitchen area, it acts as a soft transition, showcasing your favourite glassware, ceramics or art.

In our Red Hill renovation, this shelving, with mirrored backing, instantly breaks up the monotony of continuous cabinetry, adding depth and personality, and inviting light into the space.

The shelving can be used to curate vignettes that feel less 'kitchen utility' and more 'collected home'.

What special items would you showcase in a space like this?
