Who says a trade or building is the “non-academic” option? 🤔

Have you actually looked at the maths involved?

This is Craig’s “rough sketch” for the flashings on a small, simple pergola roof…
angles, pitch, folds, measurements, allowances…

Then there is tiling 👇perfect set-out, symmetry, spacing, alignment… every tile placed to line up exactly.

Falls for drainage in showers + floors (set to gradient ratios like 1:80), roof lines, roof framing (rise, pitch, run), levels + heights working off a datum, reading plans, stair tread calculations, working out volumes for concrete, quantifying materials.

One wrong number? It doesn’t line up. It doesn’t drain. It doesn’t work.

Craig has a habit of leaving little “messages for the future” behind walls on renovations.

Today’s one reads:
“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝑭𝒖𝒆𝒍 𝑪𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔!”

Now… whether that’s a conspiracy theory, political commentary, or just what happens when a builder has too much time alone with a sharpie before the villaboard goes up… we’ll let the renovators in 2076 decide.

While most kids are enjoying a sleep-in, Cooper (14) has chosen to spend part of his school holidays on site, learning firsthand what goes into a quality renovation.

👊 demo smashed out in 1 day
👊 learning safe work practices
👊 understanding how spaces are built, not just how they look
👊 seeing the value of hard work, teamwork + responsibility

Working alongside his dad in 42-degree heat in the Far West NSW, he’s gaining skills you don’t get from a screen + an appreciation for what it takes to do things properly + the value of a $.

This bathroom + laundry renovation involves a full reconfiguration, including making the bathroom larger + Coop has been right there helping with the groundwork that makes the finished result possible.

We’re pretty proud of his attitude, work ethic + willingness to give things a go.

On to the next stage… 👊 this will be a gorgeous bathroom with Italian glossy blue/green tiles + antique brass tapware! All chosen by my aunt + uncle.
