SO EXCITED TO PLANT UP THIS ROCKERY

Today I started amending the soil and prepping the beds to get this rockery ready for planting. The soil had been left uncovered for a while, so it had dried out and lost some of its vitality. I added organic matter to feed it and bring it back to life, then topped it with a layer of mulch to protect the microbes, keeping them moist, shaded, and happy 🦠

Today we brought Tina’s garden to life ✨

Over winter, we prepared the soil and mulched the beds, and today we hit the shops, picked up some beautiful plants, and got them into the ground.

We chose a stunning variety of Australian native plants, including several Isopogon, Acacia, and Eremophila species, along with a Hakea, a tree fern, and some vibrant kangaroo paws. Our feature plant is a magnificent tree fern that really anchors the space. We focused on creating contrast through foliage — pairing silvery tones with bright greens — and each plant will showcase unique flowers at different times of the year, ensuring there’s always something new to enjoy.

Just as we finished planting, the rain started pouring down, so final photos of the beds will come soon! ☔️☀️🌿

Why you shouldn’t plant gazanias in Australia 🌼

Gazanias might look great and handle dry weather well, but they’re actually a problem plant here. They spread super easily — their seeds blow around and pop up in bushland and dunes, where they take over and smother native plants. Once they get going, they’re really hard to get rid of.

In many parts of Australia, gazanias are now classed as environmental w**ds, so it’s best to skip them in your garden.

If you want the same bright colours without the trouble, try Aussie natives like Yellow Buttons, Fan Flowers, or Swan River Daisies instead — they’re beautiful, tough, and much better for local wildlife.

Planted up this Photinia privacy screen 🌿

One of the toughest you can grow! Photinias thrive in full sun, stand up to strong winds, and even cope well with urban pollution. They grow quickly and densely, making them perfect for creating a lush, living screen. In spring, they burst with clusters of white flowers that attract pollinators, and their fresh flushes of bright red foliage add a stunning pop of color to the garden.

Watch us make this 13 cubic meter pile of mulch disappear ✨

Let’s talk about why I love mulch 💕

🌱 1. Moisture Retention
Mulch acts like a protective blanket over the soil, reducing evaporation. This means your plants need less frequent watering, especially during hot or dry weather.

☀️ 2. Temperature Regulation
It insulates the soil — keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter — which helps protect plant roots from temperature extremes.

🌿 3. W**d Suppression
A good layer of mulch blocks sunlight from reaching w**d seeds, preventing them from sprouting and competing with your plants for nutrients and water.

🌾 4. Soil Improvement
As organic mulch (like wood chips, straw, or leaves) breaks down, it adds organic matter to the soil. This improves soil structure, aeration, and fertility over time.

🐛 5. Erosion Control
Mulch helps prevent soil erosion by cushioning the impact of rain and slowing water runoff, which keeps your garden soil in place.

🪱 6. Encourages Beneficial Life
Mulch supports soil organisms such as earthworms and microbes that help break down organic material and enrich the soil ecosystem.

🌸 7. Aesthetic Appeal
It gives your garden a neat, finished look — defining pathways, flower beds, and vegetable plots beautifully.

Balcony Privacy Screen for Adele 🌱

Today we installed a beautiful trellis and potted arrangement to create a lush, green privacy screen for this balcony.

Each pot features a combination of Pandorea pandorana and Clematis microphylla—two stunning native Australian climbers. These vines were carefully co-planted to complement each other: the vigorous, frost-hardy Clematis offers protection to the more frost-sensitive Pandorea, creating a supportive, symbiotic relationship.

With different flowering times, these two vines will provide a longer-lasting floral display and an extended food source for pollinators throughout the season. A beautiful and functional addition to the space 🌼🐝

Garden makeover ✨🌱🌸

Look at this backyard transformation 😍
Plant removal, w**ding, spraying, and turf laying. Now my clients can sit outside and enjoy their back yard! And their dog will stop tracking dirt into the house 😂

For this back yard I recommended a Canberra grass blend that also incorporates clover. CLOVER IS A BEAUTIFUL PLANT TO HAVE IN YOUR LAWN. Many people have been sold the notion that’s lawns should be just grass, however the more biodiverse your lawn is the stronger it is. It will be more pest and disease resistant (less likely to be ravaged by grubs) and capable of providing habitat for more species. Not much can live in grass.. just grubs! (and they will kill your lawn) Grass is also known to struggle in the Canberra climate where as clover pops off. Clover also fixes nitrogen into the soil making this nutrient bioavalible for other plants.

So please don’t broad leaf your lawns to remove clover. Try to incorporate it into your lawn!! Encourage it to grown and thrive and you will have a beautiful green back yard 💚

Time to dead head your proteas!

This gorgeous plant is Protea ‘Pink Ice’, endemic to South Africa, however this specific veriety was cultivad in Australia in the 1980’s.

It’s super cool because it flowers during winter and makes great cut flowers. Once cut the bouquets have amazing longevity and can look fresh for weeks.

However! To receive the best flower yield from your plant it is essential to dead head the spent flowers.

Now is a great time to do that ✨
