This is what a smart new build looks like in Somersby.

We installed an Apricus solar hot water system with gas backup for a brand new home... and here's the plain English version of what that actually means. It's a complete system for endless hot water.

The solar collectors on the roof soak up heat from the sun and use it to heat the water in the storage tank mounted on the wall. The panels and tank work as a team but live separately: that's what "split system" means. No heavy tank sitting on the roof.

When the sun's doing its job, the homeowners get hot water for free. No gas. No electricity. Nothing.

When it's a cold, grey day on the Central Coast and the sun's not cutting it, the gas continuous flow unit (that small box to the right of the tank) kicks in automatically as a backup. No cold showers. No switching anything manually. Just consistent hot water, whatever the weather throws at it.

Over a decade in the trade. But ask Dan what he loves most about the job and he won't mention the systems. He'll tell you it's the people. When you've got no hot water and you don't know where to start, Dan's the one who picks up the phone and makes sure you're not left guessing. He talks you through it. Clear. Calm. No runaround.
His advice for any homeowner? Don't try to figure it out yourself. Hot water systems range from old electric storage tanks to newer heat pump systems, and diagnosing what's actually wrong isn't always obvious. That's what licensed plumbers are for.
