Last week, on Wednesday 2nd October, there were 6 garden members who attended the Roma St gardens for morning tea at the Parklands Café at 9.30 am and then went on an unguided stroll around the beautiful gardens. Everyone had a lovely time and there were lots of water dragons also to dodge!

Thanks to Jill and Di for organising this outing for us to enjoy. Check out some pics from the day…. Keep an eye out for other social outings you may wish to attend.

Our September meeting, was held on Wednesday 11th September. A good turn out for the arrival of spring. Our guest speaker, Greg Aizelwood discussed various and his topic is “Tillandsias”. They are also commonly known as air plants because they obtain nutrients and water from the air, not needing soil for nourishment.
Tillandsia is a genus of around 650 species of evergreen, perennial flowering plants in the family Bromeliaceae, native to the forests, mountains and deserts of the Neotropics, from northern Mexico and the southeastern United States to Mesoamerica and the Caribbean to central Argentina. Their leaves, more or less silvery in colour, are covered with specialized cells (trichomes) capable of rapidly absorbing water that gathers on them.[2]
They have a natural propensity to cling to whatever surfaces are readily available: telephone wires, tree branches, bark, bare rocks, etc. Their light seeds and a silky parachute facilitate their spread.[3] Most Tillandsia species are epiphytes – which translates to 'upon a plant'. (Ref Wikipedia)

Todays heavy rain at our monthly meeting didn't deter garden club members. Check out some pics from today.. Don't forget to bring along plants, cuttings or seeds for the trade table (the rain meant our trade table was inside today). Thanks to all members who brought in specimens for the show bench. What a spectacular display of flowers. Hope to see you at next months meeting! Happy Gardening. 🌼

What a lovely meeting we had this morning with today's guest speaker, Peter Starkey explaining all things about Camellias. There are two main varieties of camellias - Japonica and sasanqua. Peter grows many, many different varieties which he brought in to show us. Sasanqua camellia, is a species of Camellia native to southern Japan and many varieties thrive in Brisbane. Here are some camellias from his garden.
