A time sensitive job this morning! Harvesting dry seed before the rain rolls in.
A few days of dry weather is exactly what you want before harvesting seed — it gives the pods and seed heads a chance to dry fully on the plant. Avoid harvesting first thing in the morning or in the evening when dew can settle — Middle of the day is best once things have warmed up and dried out.
Once it’s off the plant, you can hang it or lay out to finish drying before processing — away from mice and out of direct sun. Seed that goes into storage with any moisture left in it won’t last, so this step is worth not rushing.
If you value the importance of local supply chains and would like to support a local West Australian seed grower you can purchase seeds from our online store 💚

🌱 One bed. Four plant families.

Potato, garlic, brassicas, beans — all growing together, all doing a job.

This isn’t chaos. It’s how nature actually works.

Growing unrelated plants together — what’s known as polyculture — reduces insect and disease pressure while promoting healthy soil and productivity. No sprays needed when your garden is doing the work itself.

Most people grow in rows. One crop. One family. Repeat. But monocultures are fragile — they’re an open invitation for pests and disease.

Mix your plant families, and allow the plants support each other just as nature intended.

🌿✨ One of the beautiful things about growing food yourself? Independence. ✨🌿

Moringa is often called one of the most nutrient-dense plants in the world — valued for generations for its edible leaves, fast growth, and resilience in warm climates. However recently here in Australia the powers that be decided it should no longer be sold for human consumption as there is not enough proof that it is a safe product to eat …despite it being consumed around the world for 100’s of years 🤔However you can still grow this beautiful tree from seed and admire it’s beauty and nutrient dense foliage your garden from a safe distance whilst eating a Maccas takeaway because god forbid should we have a healthy population …thats bad for profits😉

Here is your weekly dose of cuteness! One of our newly hatched Khaki campbell ducklings

Our ducks don’t roam through the growing areas, however ducks do far less damage than scratching chickens and can be useful slug and snail control if free ranging. Ours play an important role behind the scenes. Their manure is added into our compost systems, helping create rich organic matter to feed the soil. We also plan to use nutrient-rich water from the duck pond as a natural fertiliser for crops.

By cycling nutrients on-site and turning waste into fertility, we can reduce outside inputs and grow in a way that’s more sustainable. Healthy soil grows healthy plants — and healthy plants produce strong seed 🌱💚

🌱Why grow from seed instead of buying punnets?🥕

Some vegetables simply perform better when grown direct from seed straight into the garden. Crops like carrots, peas and beans often dislike being transplanted, and can struggle after being moved from punnet to soil and carrots will often grow with distorted roots.

When you sow direct, seedlings emerge exactly where they’ll grow — building stronger roots, adapting to your soil from day one, and often growing into healthier, more resilient plants. You save time transplanting too.

It’s one of the most affordable ways to grow food. One packet of seed can give you dozens (sometimes hundreds) of plants for the price of a single punnet containing 6 plants.

If you’ve been thinking about growing your own food, start with seed.

Pulled w**ds don’t have to be waste… they can become one of the best free fertilisers for your garden 🌱♻️
Those deep-rooted w**ds are often mining nutrients from lower soil levels — so instead of throwing them away, turn them into a powerful fermented w**d tea to feed your veggies, fruit trees, and soil life.
In this month’s Members Email, I’m sharing exactly how to make it step-by-step, including how to boost it with ingredients like molasses, compost, or even sauerkraut juice for extra microbial life.
