The Finishing Layers | Thornlands Project

One of my favourite spaces from this new-build project in Thornlands, where texture takes centre stage.

A bedroom should feel like more than just a beautiful space. It’s the layers that bring it to life.

From the tactile Arte wallcovering and custom bedheads to the rich texture of French corduroy and the softness of bouclé, every element was thoughtfully selected by me, including the window treatments, to create a cohesive and quietly luxurious feel.

The final touch? Cushions personally crafted by Melissa, bringing together the colours, textures and finer details of the scheme.

These are the finishing layers — the considered details that transform a house into a home, adding warmth, depth and a sense of individuality.

Because it’s often the final layers that make a space feel complete.

If you’re ready to create a space that feels timeless and uniquely yours, I’d love to bring your vision to life.

Our kitchen is slowly coming to life… 🤍

Designing and handcrafting our home, piece by piece.

This has been a true labour of love, with every detail thoughtfully considered and so much of the work done by our own hands. Jonny has handcrafted our kitchen carcasses, just as he has our windows and doors throughout the home.

I’ve designed the kitchen, and while we still have more cabinetry to come, it’s exciting to finally see the vision taking shape.

Every space, every cupboard, every detail — thoughtfully designed with purpose.

And the stone… just wait until you see it! ✨

There’s still more to come, but I thought it was time to share a little glimpse of our progress.

A home built on craftsmanship, considered design and a whole lot of love.

The difference is in the details. 🤍

Behind every beautifully finished interior is the craftsmanship that brings it to life.

As we continue renovating our own home, Jonny and I are hands-on with every aspect of the process. For our cabinetry carcasses, we chose Decoply for its durability and suitability for creating strong, well-crafted cabinetry.

We’re also taking the time to edge band the exposed edges for a clean refined finish. Some might consider this an extra step that isn’t necessary on Decoply, but for us, it’s about the quality of the finished product and the satisfaction of knowing that even the finer details have been carefully considered.

Jonny is making all our cabinets himself, and here we’re sharing a closer look at the edge banding process — an important finishing detail that gives the exposed edges a neat, professional appearance.

We’ve designed and crafted our home ourselves, right down to the smallest details. It’s a hands-on approach that reflects our shared appreciation for quality workmanship, considered material choices and getting things right.

At MotzDESIGNS, I bring that same attention to detail to my clients’ homes, combining thoughtful spatial planning, carefully selected materials and custom design elements to create interiors that are both beautiful and functional.

Planning a new build or renovation? I’d love to help you bring your vision to life, from the initial design direction through to the finishing layers that make a home feel truly considered.

A project very close to my heart.🤍

The full reveal of my Raby Bay Project is coming in the December Digital Issue of Queensland Home Magazine.

What began with a vision to breathe new life into a dated canal-front home evolved into a considered, whole-home transformation - where thoughtful spatial planning, bespoke design solutions and custom elements came together to create a cohesive interior that feels both refined and relaxed.

From rethinking the kitchen layout and opening up the living spaces, to custom cabinetry, carefully considered material pairings and the finishing layers throughout, every detail played a part in bringing the vision to life.

I’m looking forward to sharing the full story of how this home came together, including the design decisions, material selections and custom details that shaped the finished spaces.

The full Raby Bay Project reveal - coming this December in Queensland Home Magazine.

The finishing layers are coming together beautifully in this grand Redlands’ home, with our attention now turning to the master bedroom following a considered renovation throughout the kitchen, bathroom and laundry, along with a fresh interior paint palette.

The motorised curtains, designed and supplied by MotzDESIGNS, bring a beautiful softness to the space, balancing natural light, privacy and ambience with effortless functionality.

Window treatments are an important part of the design process. They soften a room, introduce texture and warmth, and create a sense of cohesion between the materials, furnishings and finishes.

At MotzDESIGNS, I believe these details deserve just as much consideration as the larger design decisions. From selecting the right fabric to the finer details of how a window treatment is made and installed, every element contributes to the finished space.

As we move into the final stages of a renovation, I particularly love bringing these layers together — including personally crafting select pieces to ensure the finished interior feels considered, cohesive and uniquely personal.

Because beautiful interiors are about more than how a space looks. They’re about how it feels to live in it.

Every layer considered. Every detail with purpose. ✨

A little sneak peek of a bespoke design detail…

This stone vanity is part of a renovation currently underway, offering a glimpse of the bespoke cabinetry I’ve designed for my client.

My client wanted curves incorporated into the design, so I developed the cabinetry around this brief, with softly curved shelving extending from the end of the vanity to create a sculptural feature.

For me, good design is about so much more than what you see on the surface. It’s about considering every detail, from the proportions and form of the cabinetry to the substrates beneath, the construction methods and how each material comes together to achieve the intended result.

The stone selection was equally important. I visited the factory and personally selected three slabs, carefully considering the natural movement and veining of the stone and how it would complement the overall design.

The renovation is still in progress, but I wanted to share a small glimpse of the thought, planning and attention to detail that goes into bringing a bespoke design to life.

From what lies beneath to the finishing details, every element is considered.

Planning a renovation or new build and looking for thoughtfully designed, bespoke interiors? I’d love to hear about your project.

The beauty of marble. 🤍

There’s something about natural stone that stops me in my tracks.

The movement. The depth. The way the pattern changes from one piece to the next. You can look at it again and again and still discover something you hadn’t noticed before.

As an Interior Designer, this is why I’m drawn to natural materials. They bring something to a space that simply can’t be manufactured — individuality, texture, depth and a sense of history.

When you look at this floor, it’s easy to see the finished surface. What you don’t see is the time and work behind it.

There was considerable preparation before the first piece was even laid, and my husband has painstakingly laid every piece of this marble. Together, we’ve then spent many hours grouting, cleaning and sealing it.

The difference you can see between the marble and the freshly grouted sections gives you a little glimpse of the process behind the finished floor.

We chose White Truffle marble knowing that natural stone comes with a greater investment and requires more care and maintenance.

But for us, that’s part of its beauty.

There’s something quite extraordinary about natural stone when you think about its journey. Long before it became part of our home, nature was creating it — slowly, over immense periods of time.

The veining, movement and variation are created by nature. They aren’t something we can perfectly design or reproduce.

And I love that.

Trends come and go, but natural stone has a timelessness that feels completely different.

I don’t want every material in our home to look exactly the same in ten or twenty years as it did the day it was installed.

I want it to age.

I want it to develop character.

I want it to become part of the story of our home.

Because when you choose something natural, you’re not just choosing how it looks today.

You’re choosing something that already has a story — and then, over time, it becomes part of yours.

That, to me, is the beauty of natural materials.

And perhaps why marble will always feel so timeless. 🤍

Extending the interior beyond the walls.

The exterior was the final layer of this transformation — designed to carry the materiality, texture, proportion and detailing developed throughout the interior beyond the walls of the home.

The original entrance was heavily enveloped in timber, with the porch facade, columns, ceiling and flooring all contributing to a visually heavy exterior.

I wanted to reveal more of the home’s form and create a lighter, more refined balance of materials.

The timber-clad columns were opened up, introducing rendered surfaces and natural stone to add texture and depth while allowing the home’s form to read more clearly.

The porch floor was also lowered to accommodate a new substrate and exterior tiles, creating a more durable, lower-maintenance finish while reinforcing the new material palette.

I also designed a custom vertical screen specifically for the property, which was then made to my design. Its rhythm and proportions became another layer of detail at the entrance.

The design language was then extended to the front fence, creating a cohesive transition from the street, through the entry and into the home.

The exterior became the final expression of everything that had evolved within — creating a home that feels considered and cohesive from the street through to every space inside.

And while this is the view from the outside, the real story unfolds beyond the front door.

Every millimetre was transformed. Nothing was left untouched.

A complete transformation of this home, inside and out - from the largest spatial changes to the smallest finishing details.

I’ve been quietly waiting to share this one.

Not for much longer.

One step at a time…

Our staircase is finally ready to be unveiled.

When we bought our home, it was a late-1980s Tudor-style house with two internal staircases and a rarely used mezzanine area. As we began reimagining the spaces, we saw an opportunity to completely rethink how the levels connected.

We repositioned the staircase and built across the existing void where the mezzanine had been, transforming the layout and creating a much stronger connection between the spaces.

Like so much of our home, the staircase began with a sketch and a very clear vision — something fine and elegant, with a contemporary feel, that would sit quietly within the architecture rather than overpower it.

I designed the staircase, and my husband brought that design to life, carefully crafting each piece by hand.

Every detail has been considered. The timber treads feature a nosing that wraps around the edge to conceal the end grain, while the treads and risers are rebated so the glass sits neatly within the timber. The handrail has also been rebated to hold the glazing, creating the clean, seamless detail I was looking for.

I love the balance between the warmth of the timber and the crispness of the glass. The simplicity gives the staircase a sense of lightness and elegance, while the craftsmanship brings a warmth that makes it feel very much at home.

And perhaps what makes it most special is that, like so many elements throughout our home, it’s something we created together — I designed it, and my husband crafted it.

The skirting boards at the bottom of the staircase are still to be finished, but that’s real life when you’re renovating your own home — there’s always another detail to complete.

This is just a little glimpse into what we do on our weekends — dreaming, designing, building and crafting our home, piece by piece.

We’re slowly transforming what was once a late-1980s Tudor-style home into something that feels much more like us.

There’s still plenty to do, but it’s all coming together…

One step at a time.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend.🤍
