This International Womens Day we are launching an interview series honoring women who raise the standard over at flagbearers.com.au

A handful of us, whether admirer, advocate or mentee have reached out to someone we find inspiring to hear a little more about their story. We have Tine Van de Wiele with Els Van Meerbeek, Megan Fraser with Emma Jackson, Justine Makin with Justine Clark and Rick Jordan with Gumji Kang.

Why not use this occasion to reach out to someone - both for the potential insights and to ripple their flag a bit.

We have long taken pride in the fact that so many of our people make their home with us for extended periods of time.

Recently we took stock of this and found we have 25 people that have been with us for over 10 years. Considering the spread from almost 40 years (guess who) to 10 years we share a remarkable combined 408 years of experience!

We had a shared lunch at Rosella (thanks Rocco!) and enjoyed each other’s stories of how we came to find ourselves at Wardle - therein contained clues about why so many of us have chosen to stay for the long haul.

In order of appearance we have John Wardle, Meaghan Dwyer, Diego Bekinschtein, Alex Peck, Kah-Fai Lee, Jasmin Williamson, Adam Kolsrud, Justine Makin, Chloe Lanser, James Loder, Stephan Georgalas, Bill Kalavriotis, Jeff Arnold, Mathew van Kooy, Goran Sekuleski, Kristina Levenko, Jenna Ong, Rick Jordan, Sam Clegg, Yee Jien, Alan Ting, Richard Sucksmith, Alex Morrison, Sharon Crabb, Jeanne Skelin and Dan Conquest. Our thanks to you all!

We congratulate Josephine Harris, who, together with her partner Luke Austin, is a Kingspan Award winner for the Microhome 10 competition. Their proposal, Laneway House, is an independent project that responds to the shortage of affordable housing in Sydney’s inner suburbs by reimagining underutilised laneway garages as compact dwellings. The project challenges conventional housing models, prioritising social value, environmental responsibility, and the potential of laneways as lived urban spaces - blurring boundaries.

At Wardle, we value the ideas and initiatives our people pursue beyond the practice, particularly when they reflect the values embedded in our pillars. Blurring Boundaries is one of these, as we think strategically about how to design the spaces we work, live and gather in.

We send our heartfelt congratulations to Hugh and the team at Yiaga on being awarded three hats by Good Food this week. Opening in October, the Wardle designed venue has quickly gained recognition as a dining destination. The project brings together a shared ambition to pair beautiful food with an equally considered and evocative space.

“Serene, contemplative, like eating inside an artwork that considers the Australian landscape and becomes part of it.” Good Food

A carefully selected palette of materials, fixtures and furniture celebrates domestic craft and makers. This is complemented by a state‑of‑the‑art kitchen that supports an intimate dining experience centred on distinctly Australian produce, from ingredients to glassware.

Committed to knowledge-sharing and mentorship, Sean plays an active role in fostering architectural discourse both within the studio and across the profession. He is currently leading the Blacktown City Council Civic Centre project.

At Wardle, our practice is shaped by the depth and generosity of our people, whose contributions extend well beyond the studio. We are proud to work alongside practitioners who enrich the practice through their leadership, and commitment to architecture and design.

Shotover Street Hotel is a 200-room hotel, a key site set to become a civic threshold between Queenstown, New Zealand’s historic town centre and the emerging Lakeview Precinct.

The design breaks the building into a series of interlocking, stepped volumes that respond to the steep alpine terrain and align with the finer grain of the city. A landscaped setback at the lower levels softens the building’s edges, while a permeable retail podium and multiple entries activate all three frontages. The restrained material palette and carefully articulated façades are intended to recede against the dramatic mountain backdrop. As Wardle principal Mathew van Kooy notes, “The dominance of the mountain in Queenstown is enormous. We wanted a building that would sit quietly against it, not fight for attention.”

Above the in-situ podium, the hotel is delivered as a fully volumetric modular structure—Wardle’s first major modular project and one of the most technically complex in Queenstown. Fully fitted room pods are manufactured off-site and craned into place atop seismic isolation plates, creating two distinct modular towers connected by a lightweight bridge. This approach responds directly to the site’s extreme topography, seismic conditions and labour constraints, while accelerating delivery and improving build quality. “Modular doesn’t always mean cheaper, but it means earlier opening, fewer defects and fewer trades in a market where trades don’t exist,” says van Kooy, positioning the project as part of a broader shift in how complex hotels are delivered in challenging alpine and remote environments.

As our singular restaurant for the remarkable Hugh Allen, Yiaga enters the final stretch, we reflect on the collection of exceptional craftspeople we have curated.

They are pouring their best work into this space lined with Wardle designed tiles, crafted by Robert Gordon.

Jon Goulder designing a systematic dining chair in timber, steel and leather, in addition to crafting the dining tables.

Ross Thompson building a fine blackwood timber cellar for a very special collection of bottles.

Edward Linacre bespoke lighting system shaping the dining experience with in the main room.

Vivienne Wong crafting a custom designed table for the private dining room. Suspended above is a feature timber and glass pendant by Ruth Allen and Adam Markowitz.

We can’t wait for you to see the result of all this endeavour.
