After getting approval to take the day off from the boss, Jono and family headed to the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show yesterday. We spent a few solid hours browsing the incredible displays and stalls.
It was great to see the work in person of some of the industry's best including Martin Semkem and Andrew Stark, as well as some the industry's up-and-coming designers. The first-place winner of the achievable garden awards was inspiring and brought fresh new concepts to garden design.
Naturally Jono couldn't attend a flower and garden show without bringing home some plants for our own garden. This year's show provided a great day out not only for Jono but for us as a family.

Last weekend Jono volunteered at PICO - Phillip Island Community Orchard , helping them spread some donated mulch. Jono really enjoyed giving back to our community and is looking forward to volunteering more of his time in the future!

This morning Jono finished off an irrigation install that he has been working on the last few days. The clients wanted reassurance that when they go away their beautiful garden will still be looked after so they wanted an irrigation set up in both their front and backyard. The install started with Jono drawing up an installation plan on the computer before ordering all of the piping and fittings. The rear yard has a three-zone system that comprises of pop ups, as well as two zones of micro irrigation which is run off a Bluetooth tap controller. The front yard consists of a pop-up sprinkler systems split into two zones. Both of the front and back irrigation is run off recycled water. Jono has really enjoyed this project and is looking forward to more future projects like this.

Yesterday the family went down to Cowes pier to support local legend Youki with his first ever jetty jump. It was great to see so many of the community get behind Youki and show him so much love and support. Well done to everyone who made his dream a reality.
Jono had the privileged of working alongside Youki at the Adventure Resort when he worked there as the groundskeeper. Youki has his own modified ride on lawn mower which he uses to mow the grass at the resort. It was such a joy for Jono to work with someone who is so passionate and full of life as Youki.

Sometimes you just need to focus on the simple things in life. After a busy week on the tools, Jono slowed down and spent some time in the garden with our youngest kids this morning. They took a trip to Mite 10 this and picked out some plants. Together they surprised the boys Nanny by planting the flowers they had selected to make her a special garden bed. Jono loves spending time out in the garden and sharing his passion with all of our boys. Today he not only taught them how to plant some flowers but how we can spread some love to those we love through small gestures. The boys were so proud of their efforts. We look forward to showing you their flower bed in the coming weeks as it grows.

We now have signage on our ute so you may spot us driving around the island. Jono has been busy giving the trailer a fresh coat of paint to match with O'Brien Horticulture's colours. We have some signage coming soon for the trailer. If you see us parked out the front of your neighbours house come over and have a chat about how we can help you with your gardening needs.

Entertaining the kids can be a little challenging during the school holidays but here at O'Brien Horticulture there hasn't been any time for boredom. Jono has recently recruited our two eldest kids who have both been very eager to get their hands dirty. It has been a great learning opportunity for the boys and Jono has been enjoying sharing his knowledge and passion with them both. The boys have been responsive and are showing interest in learning all about nature.

As the year draws to an end, we just like to thank everyone who has supported O'Brien Horticulture to get up and running the last couple of months.

We have been overwhelmed with the support which we have received, not only from our wonderful clients but from other local businesses in the industry as well. These relationships our young business has quickly developed are proving to be invaluable.

Since starting O'Brien Horticulture there has been some highlights, such as working with a local artist to design a logo and getting it made up on our new uniform, the addition of some new equipment which allows us to provide our full range of services and tackling some new jobs which have pushed us professionally.

We look forward to continuing to provide a high-quality service throughout 2026.
